Found this whilst following a link on the Lee thread - comments from Keith, Ben and Craig on Lee's performance.

Few words here from some other 'josephs'

Pleased to see so many good reviews and I am dismissing all irrelevant nit-pickings like 'chubby thighs' Dear me - jealousy there is it? Any man would be more than happy with Lees physique!! He could crack walnuts between them thighs and that's just fine by me! He looks fit, toned, strong and the very image of a real man He looks utterly gorgeous!

That's great, thanks. They all seem like such lovely lads

You know what really p***es me off?

The only useful comment Michael Billington can think of to make in The Guardian about Lee is that he has 'chubby thighs.'

How insightful!

A dancer is bound to have strong leg muscles - but with the regime he's under, and by the look of him lately, I can't believe he's got enough body fat to have 'chubby' thighs.

I bet that comment really made his day...

I suppose this and SOM are 2 shows where the reviews are irrelevant in that they bear no weight on ticket sales and so the critics are going to be a bit miffed that their power is diminished.”

I agree - I haven't seen it yet but I'm going on Saturday.

All the fans who have commented here have made a point of saying that he does the comedy surprisingly well - and the movement.

I remember how good he looked in the group numbers on ADWD so I'm even more surprised by that comment about movement.

Maybe he was just feeling quite nervous last night - one of the critics said they thought he was ill too (?)

Anyway, I'll definitely be reporting back on the other Review Thread after I see the show..!

That sounds more like it.

Real-life Lee is timid and shy, but I think we can all agree that the onstage version is just a little ball of fire!

To be honest, I expected better from the Guardian crit than a comment about Lee's 'chunky thighs'. Hardly constructive criticism!

I agree with what others have said about criting Joseph in the same way that they would crit higher-brow stuff!”

I totally agree! I was so MAD at that comment.

In fact it was even worse than 'chunky' - they said his thighs were 'chubby'!

As if....!

I didn't really understand what he meant here in a couple of places.

Was he saying that Lee was too small and insignificant to play the role?

And did he mean that the previous Josephs had more charisma?

I'm lost! If he did mean these two things, I'm very disappointed and I disagree!

One of the most unbelievable comments ever on there for me:

"Mead lacks the charisma of Phillip Schofield or Jason
Donovan"

He's got to be kidding or partaking in some illegal substances surely??

I was gobsmacked by that comment as well.

Well I'm not going down that road myself. Whatever we think of the review, all critics are entitled to their opinions and wouldn't be doing their jobs if they didn't express them. Since I haven't seen the show yet, I'm hardly in a position to judge for myself anyway.

Very restrained Phil!

Seemed mainly a rehash of other reviews (mostly either negative or loincloth-themed) so rather pointless really!

http://www.heatworld.com/Article.aspx?articleid=1578&title=Lee+Mead's+opening+night+in+Joseph+%e2%80%93+first+clip!

Not so much an official review as the promise of one...but as it features a video clip of CED with Lee in a loincloth plus a note of upcoming interview, review and update on the other Josephs, I felt it was important to include it somewhere!

(Can't actually access said video clip at work but hopefully it's worth watching )

Also, thanks to all those taking the time to type up articles and track things down

I don't think it's physically possible to have less charisma than Jason Donovan

Critics don't like casting-by-TV. I think some of them are being no more objective than us!

P.S. Can you imagine the uproar if they had criticised a female performer for having chubby thighs? Double standards much?!

I don't know if this is classed as an 'official review ' but on Theatremonkey.com, Theatremonkey gives his opinion.

Very complimentary about Lee - Theatremonkey "gives credit to ALW for bringing un-noticed West End talent to the fore".

Also "The difference here is a leading man who can really sing, and who has a charisma which causes women even in the Upper Circle to lose solid shape with a single flash of pecs. Comfortable and confident in his role, yet again the public get it right."

Thanks Carol... I love that last comment!
