sony dvd playing in black and white
i have a sony dvp-pq1 and while its fine on mine(sharp) and a friends(goodmans i believe) tv, on another friends set and the tv downstairs when playing a vcd it will switch to black and white only, when you return to the players menu, that too is black and while, it reverts back to colour when turned off and on, until you press play that is
since i first noticed it (friends 14" portable with dvd looped through video assumed it was crap equipment) ive always made sure i reencode as pal (just in case, since most of it comes from US) but that didnt help, was gutted when the same problem showed up on my mums 28" hitatchi prologic set, either plugged directly in or into cheapo phillips vhs any thoughts? am tring to make a vhs of matrix reloaded, a copy to anyone who can help |

It's probably outputting in S-Video. Change the Line Out settings to Composite and "Robert's your Mother's Brother".

maybe, but sony have been skimping on menu functions for this particular model
i have the option of tv type: 16x9/4x3 audio att: on/off digital out: on/off dolby digital: dolby digital/d-pcm mpeg: mpeg/pcm dts: on/off the player has no scart, all connections from it are phono type, i was under the impression these could only deliver composite anyway |

Quite correct, if you only have phono sockets compersite is your only option, which is the worst option.
If the player is fairly new take it back, due to the black and white fault , but do not take a repair due to the fact that it is not fit for the purpose that you brought it for, as it has no RGB output |

I have quiet the same problem, only i think it is the tv that is the crap here.
I brought a VCR from home that worked fine, to my girlfriend, hooked it up to her tv using a standard euro scart cable and it displayed everything in black and white. Seeing as the vcr is rather old, my guess is that its composite scart. But when we hoocked up a PS one to the tv using standard euro scart it also was black and white... Anyone got any idea how to 'fix' this as my gf wants to buy a PS2 but offcourse... only if this gets fixed

If I press the AV button on the remote I get AV1 in colour press it again I get AV1 in black and white, press it again I get AV2 in colour, etc. I think this is because each input can be either RGB or SVideo. So try pressing the AV button multiple times and see what happens

Whats the manner of connection. ie do you have a set of phono leads comming out of the DVD player that plug into a scart plug on the TV, if you do some of these adaptos have a switch to allow SVideo as well if the switch is in the wrong position that may be the cause of your trouble

the player has 4 phono outs,video/L/R and one labled digital out (coaxel) not used, which do plug into a scart adaptor, though no switches
i have an s-video out, requiring an s-video lead, what difference would using this make? good news though, reencoded copy now plays in colour guess my tv does ntsc, downstairs doesnt thanks to everyone who scratched their heads on my behalf |

if you can you should definately use S-video instead of composite, the quality is much better, still not quite as good as RGB but not that far off at all.
if you have a S-video socket on your TV all you need is a standard S-video lead however a lot of TVs dont have this socket and can only take S-video via the scart socket in which case you would need either a S-video lead and a scart block with S-video socket on it or a special S-video to scart lead, i got one of these recently from Special Reserve its actually named as DVD out to scart, got it for using the TV out on my computer for games and movies was amazing how much better it was than the cheap composite lead i had before |
