Dear all...

I am interested in doing a little semi-serious Psy experiment.
Tomorrow is the opening night, and we'll all be forming our very first impressions of the housemates.

I have considered the options available to me... and i am left with this as the best option..

I am looking for people to note down their 'First impressions' of the housemates, from the moment each housemate leaves the car ( i assume they'll arrive in seperate cars again?), to the moment they first step foot inside the house.

This gives each of you a few moments to note down your initial view on each housemate.

I will compile the results of your initial opinions within the first week, and then publish them here.
I intend to then query the SAME people at mid-way through the show, and maybe again near the end. It will be interesting to see if opinions change over the 9 weeks.

So, for those of you who are up to it. It will basically mean you'll be noting down onto your print-off, what your first impressions are of each housemate on opening night.

Any DS forum member is welcome to participate in this task.

First Impressions Questionnaire

1. Print off a copy of the document, which you can use during the show itself.

2. Save a copy of the form onto your computer, so that once the opening part of the show is done, you can call up the file, and enter your responses directly onto the form -which you'll email to me as an attachment.

* to save a copy of the form, via the webpage, use 'File', then 'save as'. and give the form the name : psy_exp.doc

There are further notes on the form you should follow.

Hi, neat idea. Can I just ask for clarification of a couple of points:

Assuming the format is the same as last year, we'd see them arriving outside the house in cars, climbing the stairs and being frisked. At the same time we may be shown their application videos.

1)Do you want impresions based on just the physical appearance or can we give impressions of the application videos.

2)Once someone has entered the house and we see intial reactions to the space, greetings etc, would you like impressions based on those or purely those few seconds between the car and the door?

3) What if they show a CBB2 style interview with each one in their hotel room or any other clips etcfeaturing the person - do you want to hear comments on those?

yeah, thats the annoying thing, since i have no control over this, all sorts of stuff could be shown.

i have just set a basic timeline, car to the front door. what ever is in between then, just decide what you wanna note down then.

if i had the choice/time, i'd get a few dozen people, who didnt know anything, and show them the first 30-90 seconds when the housemates are introduced, then ask for their initial views...
but i havent the option right now.

This is a really good idea.

In the boxes that say like|love|hate ect. do we type what we think of them or just put a symbol in there to indicate which one we have selected?

So...what is this meant to prove? That people change their opinions based on looks and how much information they have......

I'm not out to 'prove anything'.

Actually, I just am curious how some peoples initial attitudes will compare to how the same people will feel about the housemates later in the season.

theory issue 'first impressions' as a predictor of later liking.

As i noted, since i have no control over the show, its really just a semi-serious thing. Am just curious how people feel about the housemates in the those initial moments before they step foot in the house.

I object to this being stuck at the top of the Forum menu, where we would normally look to find the Forum's most popular threads.

I think he's done it because chances are people aren't going to check his column and it's crucial that people see this for the experiment in time for the very start of BB. As for it being stuck up here, it get deleted at 9pm tomorrow

Be reasonable, it's been pushed up to the top purely so the maximum number of people can see it and hopefully take part in the experiment.

If members are really interested then they can find Calrissian's column at the top of the page.... it's prominent enough!!!

Come on Eejay give the guy a break, it's an experiment for the whole forum to take part in, and he's trying to get it to work. I can imagine the majority (myself included) wouldn't really look much at the columns before the start of BB, so had it not been posted on his forum, it would all be a big waste of time.

I think this experiment is a brilliant idea.

I shall be interested if my first impressions stick or if I'll shift my opinion over just day's or weeks!

With respect you are not getting any 'attitude' ! If you are going to have your threads stuck to the top of the Forum for special attention , then expect your fellow Forum members to pass a comment or two. That's life & that happens to every thread!!!

Didnt anyone tell you, us psychologists are (mostly) neurotic and somewhat (more than usual) unstable people. If you so much as blow on us, its quite often the case that we'll like burst into tears.

My first impression will be that they're all arseholes, and by the end, they will all still be arseholes, but just some more so than others.

Unless of course someone really surprises me.

Do you really think that people gather much of a first impression of somebody in that time?

As far as the last Big Brother went,..most people seemed to start making first impressions of the housemates after they entered the house and walked down the steps...not before.

I mean, most people start judging them as soon as they start interacting with each other.......I honestly didn't have much of an impression at all when they got out of the car and went to the front door,...I mean, what did we get?...a few seconds if that, on each housemate?

I don't know if I'm in a minority, but the only type of first impression I got from the time period you ask for last year, was like,...she's loud,......he's smiling,.......she's smiling,......he's smiling,.......she's smiling oh and look she's waving as well,......he's smiling.......etc., etc..basically I was indifferent. I was waiting to actually get more than a few seconds to find out more about them.

Do you see what I mean?........What sort of value would the experiment have, if that's about the strength of feeling we get when we first see the HMs?

Now if you asked about our first impressions based on their first night,........I think that your experiment has the scope of being very interesting..........You'll have more to analyse and work with,........more than:- --smiling--, --looks nervous---, blinks a lot.

Besides which, you'll probably have to use the first night anyway, as you're bound to get people not using the timescale criteria you've given. Some will probably use the judgement they've made in the first few hours, letting you know later on that they based their judgement from --car to front door--when they didn't in truth.

Could be very interesting if you use the first night (Or first couple of hours) for us to make judgements.

But if you want to use --from car to front door---, I think you're on to a non-winner I'm afraid.....Can't see people having much of an opinion.

Actually, as somebody mentioned above,..your experiment is knackered straight away.
You may as well forget about --from car to house door---.
That's going to have no bearing whatsoever, if most people see the audition tapes.

Good grief ! The HM's haven't even shown their faces yet and there seems to be controversy?
Poor old Calrissian only want's a light hearted experiment after all.
