Anything else connected to the hub at the same time?

No, nothing. One minute it said ipod connected, the next it said there was a power surge and now it won't recognise it whenever I connect it. I've put it on charge and will connect it again when it is fully charged as I wonder if it was trying to suck the power from the pc to recharge.

Is the iPod actually working?

Yes, the problem is when connected to my pc. IPOD works then but the pc will not recognise it and insists there is a power surge on the USB port connected to the IPOD.

Are you still using the hub? If not try a different port.

I've done all of that. This is a technical problem.

Got a spare iPod wire?

No...though the wire seems ok as when connected to the charger it's working fine.

Help, help help! I have trawled the web all evening for a solution and cannot find one at all. If there are any techies out there who have overcome this problem (my pc is not a DELL) please let me know...this is driving me barmy!

Try connecting a different device that uses USB.

Have you checked that your USB ports are enabled via the control panel?

WOOHOOO! After 1.5days, I've found a solution.....really long winded but have done it!

I have had similar problems with usb devices before (but not with my ipod).

This is how I got the device to work.
- I used USBDeview to remove the device from the system (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html)

Now connect the iPod to a usb port (not via a hub). you will get the message Windows has found new hardware this will reinstall the ipod. (all the music will still be on the ipod)

hope this helps...

(whoops, to slow here .... sorry just saw you got it fixed)

Thanks. It was a REALLY long winded process to get there in the end and was quite involved....but it works and I'm a happy bunny again.
