Hi all,

I've just got the keys for my new flat and I want to get the broadband up and running. I've decided that TalkTalk is the cheapest, but there seems to be a snag related to the line not having been activated yet, and I'm finding it a rather unbelievable one.

BT and TalkTalk are both telling me that I must activate the line through BT, and on doing so I enter into a 12 month contract with them. Then, I have to tell BT that I want to switch providers, cancelling the contract and incurring a £70 fee. This seems outrageous!

Can anyone confirm that this is indeed the case and that there is no way around it?

Chars!

This is indeed the case.

TalkTalk could if they wanted to take on the line rental install - they would simply pay OpenReach (BT) to install the line.

However they don't want to pay the £103.40 fee or offer to pass that fee on to the customer. The £103.40 payable even for flicking a switch at the exchange, though could be more involved on some installs.

Talk Talk and others would rather simply take over an existing line as that only costs them £2.35 from OpenReach (BT).

Take this as a blessing in disguise. TalkTalk are dreadful, pathetic broadband, their phone service prevents you from using cheap call providers and their customer service is awful.

Thanks TheFirstCut.

After a little digging I've found that the BT line has been disconnected and that it would cost me £124 to have it reinstalled, a price just not worth paying. The flat has cable, so I'm going to have to take advantage of that!

Sounds stupid, have you made a complaint to Ofcom about this? It sounds like a clear monopoly issue to me.

In what way do you feel it is a monopoly issue?

Yeah, that was the overpowering instinct I had arising from the resentment of having to pay them for freedom of choice; but it's their equipment, so I suppose they can charge whatever they want.
