Philips generally isn't popular around here - with good reason in my opinion, their reliability is not great and the customer service when things do go wrong is terrible.
I'd suggest the Panasonic 42" if you want plasma, or the 40" Sony LCD seems to be well regarded if you can live with a couple of inches less. |

http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/cl/2/TV...%3B31.0%3B40.0The cheapest I can see is £668, not sure how current the model is though (Not up on Sony's but hear good things about them a Panasonic) The previous posters right, stay away from Philips, not sure abut CS, but a friend of mine had an issue with his Philips. (Was very early days in LCD though) |

My folks got a Sharp LC42XD1E with full 1080 display - now to be had for around £880 I think. Some of the earlier sets had a problem with banding [where parts of the screen were not the same shade/look as other parts - bit like stripes on a cricket pitch/tennis court], but after a replacement (latest model has an 'A' on the end) their set is fantastic fed from a Virgin High Definition box at 1080i.
Remember a 42" set gives a 9-10% larger screen display than a 40" set - that 2" diagonally adds up to a sizeable chunk of horizontal and vertical extra display. There's a massive thread - 7500 messages long - on the AVFORUMS at http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...81973&page=503 As I say the 42" is a NICE set as long as you dont get a faulty one with 'bands' OR a buzzing power supply, and both have been far less common recently. |

steer clear of Phillips i have had mine for 18 months and it has broken down twice.
actually steer clear of LCD too, why dont you get a Plasma, it will give you a much better picture. if you are on a budget go for this... http://www.dixons.co.uk:80/martprd/s...ory_oid=-21214 |

Was speaking to a guy who installs in chains of pub and clubs last week and he said they have moved to LG instead of philips as they had almost a 1 in 5 failure of new sets in the run up to the world cup last year. They had installed over 500 sets and had the grief of getting them repaired/replaced at short notice.
We also gave in on them because of reliability and service. |

I'd steer clear of these too http://www.cheaptelevision.co.uk/pla..._articleid/333
My mate has one (along with a samsung dvd player and they both went wrong in 10 months of ownership, so samsung picked the tv and dvd player up and a week later returned them unfixed minus the controllers lol. Had to get them picked up again and still waiting for them to come back. |

http://www.lowpricefinder.co.uk/xPpr~p-36125988.aspx or Toshiba 42C3030D 42 in for £699 incl P&P at http://www.lowpricefinder.co.uk/xPpr~p-41077171.aspx or the Panasonic TH42PX7 42 in at £827 incl p&p at: http://www.lowpricefinder.co.uk/xPpr~p-43657874.aspx

The "Hitachi" there is actually a Vestel and worse than the Philips.
The Toshiba is certainly better than any Philips though. |

Does anyone have any opinions/comments on either of these 2 LG models?
I saw them in Currys at the weekend and couldn't see what differences they had that meant a £500 price difference. The guy in store just said the more expensive one is the latest model http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...ory_oid=-30633 http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...&category_oid= Does anyone have any opinions on what to look for and baseline requirements for a top of the range 42" LCD TV? |

You are within your rights to expect a refund/exchange.
However, the retailer has the right to get the item inspected prior to issuing this. Still, you know what they say about Philips. |

Yes, there's many of them.
It's irrelevent though, IF the TV is faulty, the engineer will write it off on Thursday when he comes. Still, you know what they say about Philips stuff... |
