Well pretty much the title say's it all. Iam finaly going to get a LCD TV, but what do I need to look for? I want a 32" inbuit freeview. I just want down my local Sony shop and they had a nice looking 32" for £599 reduced from £999!!! Was very temped to just buy it there and then as I'm a bit of a Sony fan, but don't know what I should be looking for it to have to make it so it's good enough to last me several years.

All advice you can think off please?

Also if you have any suggestions as to what to buy please let me know. I have a top budget of £700.

Cheers

Check who made the panel. Sony TV may have a Samsung/Sony panel in it, or a AU, LG Philips, CPT, Hannstar or whatever, and the same goes for all TV manufacturers.

Then check static contrast ratio, has it got lots of inputs for you to plug all your other toys into, and does it look "nice".

Check forums for warranty experience of other customers too.

Sony have NEVER made LCD panels, so you won't find any Sony set with a Sony panel in it.

However, almost all of them now use S-LCD panels, made in a joint venture between Sony and Samsung. The bottom of the range cheaper sets use Samsung panels though, and the small sets have used panels from a number of manufacturers.

They did have a manufacturing plant at one time for LCD monitor panels, but the terms of their venture with Samsung now means they do not.

But even the manufacturers cited such as Samsung use a great many panels from other manufacturers, even two TV's of the same model type may have different manufacturer's panels in them.

Check who made the panel.
How's the "man in the street" supposed to find that out?

Regarding contrast ratios:

I've noticed in the new Argos catalogue that the Sony LCDs are quoted at about 1200 contrast ration while all the other manufacturers seem to be about 5000-7000. Is this because they are artificially boosting their figures to make their sets look better or are there different ways of quoting CR and they use the figure that gives the highest result in a similar way to how music watts are quoted?

If the latter, then how do the different figures actually compare with each other so we can create a level playing field?

Yes, the figures are measured using different criteria.

You can't really, but why would you want to?, any decent LCD has a perfectly acceptable contrast range, and decent blacks - a few meaningless numbers don't affect that!.
