wait till you hear him say

Hey Jon, know any more of that Vogon poetry or Klingon opera

One of the girls interupted his LOTR discourse yesterday with something like

Who were the hobbits then, are they like little people

I thought he was going to say

Oh, sit down, I'll start again at the beginning

calm down, calm down

bit of poetic license perhaps

But the stuff he bores on about is all things I have an interest in, I've read LOTR ( but not seen the film), seen every episode of Star Trek, physics is my hobby

Not so sure about the relative heights of English cathedrals, though, I think he could lose me on that one

Mind you, as he said, he can't confirm that Salisbury is higher than Norwich by personal observation as he's never been to Salisbury. So, he's not infallible

But Norwich is the second tallest spire... and I've been to Salisbury and Norwich cathedrals and without getting a measuring tape out or performing advanced triangulation, Salisbury looks a bit taller than Norwich..

So if he went to Salisbury he would make a point of taking a personal observation of the height of it's cathedral?

I love this guy!

Bob
Of course here we have York Minster which is a whopping great big cathedral!

Isn't York Minster a minster though???

St. David's in Wales is the cathedral with the smallest city.

if Jon was a DS member he would be banned to save server storage space and for digressing.

A Minster's also a cathedral, it's also known as the Cathedral of St Peter & St Paul. I've also been to St Peter's Rome at the Vatican, which has brass marks on the floor to indicate the relative lengths of the 'top ten' next biggest cathedrals - the only two from the UK which rate a mark are St Paul's London and York Minster.

oops maybe I timed my post inappropriately wasnt meaning to discourage the debate of whos spire is the biggest I was hoping to find out the answer actually.

I was meaning Jon would relate everything to Tolkien and Star Wars etc.

This is the precise point he was making, that Norwich is the second tallest, he has read that Salisbury is bigger, but hasn't carried out personal observations to confirm it

I expect he's got the I-Spy book of British Cathedrals and is ticking them off one by one, but hasn't got to S yet

I read it that way to start with, then put 2 and 2 together and realised what you meant...

You can go to sleep safe in the knowledge that, barring meteorite strikes on Wiltshire, Salisbury has the largest spire in the UK.

Are we showing our age by remembering the I-Spy books...

Jon would be at the forefront of the campaign to get the generous dimensions of the Jedi Temple recognised by the Pope and dutifully marked out on the floor of St Peter's...

I bet he put Jedi on his census form!

But surely the Jedis aren't a branch of catholicism though? They don't adhere strongly to the catholic faith
