Landline 'Ceased' Reconnecting?

Hello all,

I am moving into a flat next week that has an inactive BT phone line. The phone line was last active around a year ago.

BT want to charge me £125 to 'instal' this line to re-connect it as the line is probably 'ceased' as they can find no record for it?!?

Surely, they only have to push a button to re-connect the line, all the equipment is already there. £125! what a rip off?

I don't necessarily need the line to be BT, just an active landline (i need one to plug Sky TV into).

What are my options?

dawny10 on MSE came up with the below list of the few firms willing to pay Openreach to install a line a few days ago:

BT - £125
Madasafish - £115
PlusNet - £105
Bulldog - £99

With Madasafish and PlusNet you are not tied into a 12 month contract for phone - just need to give 1 months notice.

If the line is working, then reconnection should be free. Only if an engineer needs to come round to get the line working will they charge £125.

Call them up again and explain to them that the line is working (assuming it is). They should be able to test it from their end. Do you get a dialtone if you plug in a phone into that line?

I'm going to be moving to a new flat shortly as well, and I'm in the same situation whereby BT have indicated that an installation charge may be payable.

It's been mentioned in the quote above that BT should be able to test the line from their end. Just wondering, since the line would be disconnected, there's presumably no telephone number associated with the line (which is the thing you usually give BT to test the line). In this instance, do BT basically have to "hunt" for your line based on your address??
