Sony RDR-HXD860 Divx playback?

Had this Sony since it was launched and its been a great buy, really reliable and I'd be knackered without it!

The only slightly annoying thing is when I download a (legal!) torrent TV show in the form of e.g. an AVI, then burn it to DVD the Sony won't play it However, my 3-4year old LG DVD player in the next room will play the same disc without any problem.

To be honest my knowledge of the various video formats and compatibility issues isn't up to much . So, would my Sony only play a downloaded AVI DVD if it was first converted to Divx? Is that even possible? The RDR-HXD860 is clearly listed in the blurb as being Divx compatible by the way!

Any help appreciated, cheers.

Just as a follow up - Just checked the user guide and it clearly states it plays Divx video files on a range of the usual dvd formats. Also, I've just converted an AVI file to Divx, after downloading some software, and burnt a DVD and the bloody thing still won't play on my RDR-HXD860

I'm even more confused now

Has anyone had any success in playing Divx files on their HXD860's?

I've had this problem a couple of times, once the "avi" file wouldn't play and another when there was no sound. And as you've said, it's OK on other equipment. I've put it down to a different codec used and converted it to DVD format.
Apart from the 2 mentioned all the other "avi" files play fine on my 860.

Can you tell me what you use to burn your avi DVD's? Maybe I'm using the wrong software as I've never had an avi DVD play on my 860 yet!

If I create a Data DVD with an avi file on it, it will play those but the image on screen is only around half the size of what it normally is. Plus, if I want to lend a copied DVD to someone else a data DVD disc is usually no good to them.

I just use Roxio's "drag and drop". I have one of those old fashioned 4:3 CRT (have had it 14 years and it just won't break, Damn Panasonic), so they appear as "letterbox", which isn't too bad. I sometimes use VSO software to convert avi to DVD format, and these play as "widescreen".

*note: my use of the expression "letterbox" is quite a large black bar top and bottom, and "widescreen" is thinner black bars with left and right margins "chopped". But again I should point out this is on a 4:3 CRT.

Not sure that this will help you, though there must be others with a view on it.
There was some discussion here http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...7&postcount=24

I've just got hold of the Roxio software and managed to burn an AVI file to DVD that actually plays on my 860! It was just a case of converting it to DIVX and bingo

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!
