Canon EOS 400D, Nikon d40x or Pentax K10?
Rev. Slodden

I have decided to purchase a dSLR, the above 3 are my shortlist for purchase, but which one? Will they work with Vista? I'd be interested to hear fm's personal experiences with any of these cameras and opinions of them.

I'm a simple man of the cloth so please bear in mind I'm not so great with the techno speak. Any feedback would be much appreciated

They should all work perfectly with Vista.

Nikon currently have their £60 cashback offer on, i think there's a £50 offer on Canon.

I've no experience with the latest Pentax although i've just got rid of an *isT D which was a nice camera.

One of the main advantages of the Nikon over the Canon is the supplied lens, it's much better quality.

I am leaning towards the Nikon I must say, it's had excellent reviews and I have heard the kit lens with the EOS is rubbish. The main thing that puts me off with the pentax and the nikon is the SD card instead of CF, I have a number of CFs, I know nothing about SD memory.

SD in my opinion is absolutely fine, it writes quickly and the Nikon is compatible with the new SDHC cards.

I've just bought a D40 (not D40x) due to the fact that 6mp is more than enough for 99% of people.

I love it so far.

Also, if you're after simplicity it has built in help and guidance.

I liked the menu on the Nikon when I checked the cameras at Jessops yesterday. There are also some nice bundles at Jessops, oh but which one?

Make sure that whatever you go for, you get one that's listed on the cashback promo on www.nikon.co.uk.

Nikon seems to have stripped a lot of features from the D40 and D40x. It has no auto bracketing, only 3-point auto focusing (even my 4 year old Canon has 7-point), and there are limited lenses that will auto focus with it. There is no AF motor in the body, so you have to buy the more expensive lenses that have the motor, like the third-party Sigma HSM lenses. Bear that in mind if you're going to want to expand (telephoto, macro, upgrade the kit lens, etc.).

The Pentax seems to get some good reviews, and has the much better 11-point AF system. There is a good choice of lenses too.

Canon are as popular as ever, easy to use I suppose. I have no experience with the 400D, but the earlier 300D has been a good camera to use.

P.S. Don't think I'm one of those stupid Canon vs. Nikon people, I couldn't care less. I'm just thinking it may end up costing you more in the long run with lenses, as I was debating/researching the D40 for a while.

I love my EOS 400d and it's got 9 point auto focus which is great.
