Hi,

I am thinking of buying my first DVD player but as you all know that is only 1/2 the story. It's films that count. I want to build up a collection of "older" films and then build on that with "choice" titles. I was wondering if anyone had a view on these Alba 114 (Tesco) and Hyundai 320A (Sky.com) that offer the DVD player and 102 films.

I know a lot of the films will be a bit crap - goes without saying - but it seems a reasonable way of getting perhaps 20-30 watchable films. The DVD on their own seem to cost about £70-80 so that means for the Hyundai the 102 fims are costing £120 and for the Alba the films cost £60.

Can you buy these bundles anywhere without the DVD players? The main concern I have is that I want the DVD player to be able to play Kodak Picture CD's and I dont think the Alba or the Hyundai will play them. If you can buy the bundles seperately then I am tempted by the Yamada DVD2100 or the Cyberhome 405 (the 505 and 528 dont play Kodak CD's!!).

Thanks.

P

Bought a Bush 2024 DVD player last weekend. £50 for Powerhouse. Plays well, smooth, and easy operation. Also come with a scart lead. Picture looks almost identical to other machines like Pioneers, Sony's, and other cheaper models. I think they all offer a very similar picture. It's not like VHS where pictures could be quite different between good, bad, old, and new.

Personally I would just concentrate on getting the best dvd player you can afford and worry about dvds later. Though dvds are about £16 ish when they first come out, on sites like Play.com they can drop down to something like £5.99 after a while, a lot now are about £7.99 which seems pretty reasonable.

The films that usually come with these packages are ones that you have never heard of and are probably rubbish. It would be far better for you to concentrate on your favourite films. I would also suspect these package films do not include any extras which are usually in abundance on well known films. What I suspect will happen, as it did in my case, I have an ever growing library of dvds which are starting to take up some room, so I wouldn't disadvantage yourself by having a load of rubbish films to start off with.

Another thing to watch out for with dvd players is how they connect to your tv, how they output their signals (RGB being the best, S-video second), whether there are any optical/coaxial outputs to connect to a home cinema amp should you decide to upgrade in the future. All points to consider now.

my friend has one of these and personally i dont see the point, i havent heard of a single movie they have, most are old and cheaply made, a lot black and white. They are put on double sided discs so its hard to find the one you want (both sides silver) and no extras...

May I suggest you have a decko at Richer sounds website, (WWW.richersounds.co.uk). There may be some units that will be of interest.
