Whilst surfing around looking for websites about widescreen I came across a couple of anti-widescreen sites as well with people who actually think its all a conspiracy!

Check this out - can you believe this guy?!

Haven't laughed so much in ages (assuming by the tone of the site that he's clearly taking the piss). Either that or he really is an idiot. Scares me to think anyone could really seriously think that way...

i looked at the above mentioned site. i think the guy might be referring to the "artificial" widscreen look applied to pop videos etc.

then again .....

Great fun!

Maybe they should add this,

Ever noticed how whenever you go in a shop, all the widescreen pictures looks stretched. Thats because it's not a square tv!

And you pay extra to have a widescreen tv!

Hehe, thats a funny site. What a stupid fuk.

Do you think someone should email him with the link to this site - www.widescreen.org

That site tells you all about panning and scanning, and that it looses up to 50% of the original picture. Im sure that will change his mind about what he writes on his Anti-Widescreen site.

I think i will email him now, if he has an address on his site. I may also give him the link to this thread.

[edit]
I notice some of the text in that site refers to 1999 and 2000, so when emailing the person i got an imidiete reply from the postmaster that the person doent exist anymore, doh.

[edit2]
I also thought it google the word "lettershlocking" to see if i could find anymore about this. Here is a copy of a post he made on a newsgroup:

From: savetele @ aol.com (SAVETELE)
Newsgroups: alt.conspiracy
Subject: Film censorship conspiracy
Date: 29 Sep 1997 12:22:13 GMT

The conspirators are at it--trying to destroy our right to watch and enjoy
movies on video, broadcast and cable tv. They are using
"letterboxing"/(lettershlocking) to put black bars on the top and bottom of
the tv screen, blocking those portions of the screen so that you cannot
watch or enjoy the movie. They even use the lie of calling it "widescreen"
when the width of the screen remains the same, but the image is shrunk down
tiny between the black bars. They are seeking to impose this on us also
through HDTV (we must defeat that in the marketplace and by complaining to
the FCC) and by DVD players with built-in lettershlocking features (don't
buy DVD!).
For the objective facts about lettershlocking censorship and how we can
and will defeat it, see our web page listed below. FREEDOM!

What is quite scary is the fact that he appears to be completely serious. How the hell he can expect to be taken as such when throwing terms such as letterschlocking and cutscreen all over the place is anyone's guess.

The stupid anti-widescren person
99.999999999999% of the viewing public recognizes this for the atrocity it is
Nope, that's the percentage of people retarded enough to set up a site such as linked to by RichardS

when i worked at currys i ahd a few customers that thought widescreen was all that was wrong

one woman came up & said its bloody rubish this all you sell is those wiescreens

saying that though i had one old woman (about 70) who said to me the had about £600 to spend on a wiescreen tv but she didnt knwo anytihg abotu them so i spent about a hour demonstratign the widescreen tv's & there pluses & minuses

she waled away a very happy person with a £450 quid widescreen tv with a £80 quid dvd player as the widescreen was so cheap (her grand children ahd been buggign her)

nicest bit was she came in 2 days later & thanked me for explainign it all & bought a freeview box for the kids channels when the grand kids were round

Ahh, yes, I have also seen some people go into shops, take one look at the WS sets, and say "dont wont one of those - have you get any normal tvs?" or "dont like widescreen, why are they using it?"

I think idescreen pictures do look quite good, but the majority of tv programmes arent in widescreen, so i have vertical black bars on my tv most of the time!

personally i think there was never really any point in widescreen, it was just another way of getting people to buy stuff

however, i dont its worth losing sleep other like that guy!

Slightly off topic but if you are bored when the wife takes you shopping, try going into Dixons / Currys / the Link etc and when approached by a sales assistant with the question "Can I help you" respond with "With what?". This completely throws them as they have not been programmed to answer this question. I have had some amusing Saturday mornings.

No analogue tv stuff is broadcast in widescreen. You have to put up with black bars left and right if you want to maintain the picture shape and sharpness, or stretch the picture to fit.

As for the main 5 channels, most content via their digital broadcasts are 16:9 Widescreen. Hooked up to Sky Digital, my WS tv is in Wide mode most of the time. Sky's "own" channels however, like Sky One, and Sky News don't yet use Widescreen, although this is set to change.
