widescreen tv

I am thinking of buying a 32 inch widescreen tv probably a new Sony one. I just want a plain tv with no dolby prologic because I already have a home cinema system and a Sky digibox. Any recommendations or advice?

well, I just got the 28" Sony Wega without the dolby surround sound. It works well and looks nice.

I didn't go for 100Hz, as I'm not totally convinced, the 100hz do look good next to a 50hz model, it has a much more stable image and no flicker of course, but I do feel it makes everything look a bit artificial and overly colourful.
Best to go see for youself though. I think either performs very well.

I decided to get the cheaper 50Hz KV28FX20 model, and get a DVD rather than spend more on 100hz and not be able to afford the DVD player.

Panasonics also are excellent TV's. get the 'Tau' models rather than the cheaper non super flat tube versions if you can affford one. TX32PK3 (I think) is the model number for the 32" 50hz model.

Panasonic are to release several new widescreens soon, with OnDigital AND Sky digital inbuilt together!... so they might be worth a look when they arrive ....

The Panasonic TAU range have the edge over Sony....Go for it, 100Hz Mind.

my parents have just got the new Panasonic TX32PG30 which is a 100hz 32" Tau super flat non dobly surround sound tv. It gives excellent pictures and great sound. It looks real neat and much more compact (no huge bulky rear) than many 28" widescreen TVs! it has an unsual dark blue and silver cabinet but it looks real classy.

3 Scarts and front AV sockets and loads more too!

I'm impressed so far!

I like the look of the Sony KV 32FX65 (but not the price). Though I am a bit concerned about the geometric faults mentioned on this site. You imagine big wavy lines down the edges. We have a Sony set now which is still going strong about 7 years which is pretty good but are tempted by the widescreens.

do mean the wavy lines when say viewing a picture in 4/3 or 14/9 mode, where you see the edge of the picture against the black side bands?

This is a little problem, and usually much worse on the cheap widescreens, and much less on the better models.

Try to see the model you're interested working and see what you think.

I have not actually seen any wavy lines on widescreens in the shops. I have been reading some of the previous threads which indicated that Sony's had a particular problem with this. So basically it is when there is a black bar you don't see a geometric line but isn't really a major problem.

Sounds like a Sony set is the best option or a Panasonic which I think just confirms what I thought it the first place.

Please forgive my ignorance but I have question about widescreen tvs and I am just learning about them. Last night we watched a widescreen version of Gladiator filmed in 2.35:1 on a normal tv and obviously viewed a very narrow picture. On a widescreen tv would this video have filled the whole of the screen, would it have been marginally smaller or would it have been the same size but longer? We still enjoyed watching it because we knew we were not missing any of the picture. We have Star Wars Episode 1 on video and when watching this it is very apparent it has been cut down.

For a 2.35:1 video/dvd, you would still get a small band at the top and bottom of the screen (about 1 inch on a 28 inch widescreen tv). But the picture would be the same as on the 4.3 screen just bigger.

Thanks that has cleared that up.
