Phoning abroad
GWJT06

Hey

I'm moving to Germany for around 9 months and wondered what's the best way to keep in touch with home. I've got a K810i SIM free with an Orange SIM card on PAYG but don't know whether to keep this or change to pay monthly. Does anyone know the best way to use your mobile abroad for an extended period of time? Do foreign SIM cards actually work in your phone, or will the costs be the same anyway? Cheers

The first thing to do is work out how you will be using your phone. Calling home? Receiving calls from home? Calls within Germany?
Once you've sorted that out, check the call costs for your current tariff, either on the Orange website or by contacting them.
Check with other providers (both here and in Germany) for their rates.
You could also consider getting a German phone and a Uk phone. You should also consider using a 'calling card' service to phone home from a landline.

If you have use of a computer with internet daily etc.. You could go the voip route, Which wouldnt cost you much for calling mobile's and free uk landlines and german Landlines

You would also be able to get a free uk landline so people in the uk will ring a local number and only get charged this.

If you're planning on using a foreign sim in your phone, you'll to ask orange to provide you with a network unlock code (NUC) before you leave, otherwise your phone would be limited to using only orange sims. Once its unlocked, you've got the freedom of using whatever sim/network is offering the best prices.

Not sure what orange offer, but vodafone offer vodafone passport. Rather than paying an extortionate rate per minute, you pay a 75p connection charge per call and the rest of the charge is charged as though you're in the UK. Orange may offer something similar, but if they dont you might want to consider jumping ship and trying out Passport. I've used it on both my contract and PAYT and its saved me a fortune.
