Anybody know the answer to this please. I'm thinking of buying a cordless phone that is a dect phone and is GAP compatible, does that mean that in future, if I want to add another cordless handset, I can get any brand/model provided it is GAP and dect compatible, or do I have to get the same brand and model number as my original purchase? TIA

In my understanding, DECT is the over air interface for actually transmitting and recieving the radio signals while making a call. However, when the DECT standard was first set, each manufacturer was left to create their own interface for some of the other features such as the registration of phones to base stations.

GAP is meant to bridge this gap (sorry) and in theory a GAP compatible phone should be able to register to a GAP compatible base. Don't expect to be able to use some of the more advanced features such as base station programming, but the phone should work.

In my experience I've had quite a bit of success with this - but it hasn't been 100% success. I once had a Hagenuk phone which was quite resiliant until nasty green slime grew on its base station's circuit board when I accidentally spilled a glass of water over it in my sleep (it was next to the bed). A subsequent purchase of a Binatone phone & base allowed me to pair the Hagenuk handset to it and it worked very well (even allowing caller display to appear on the handset - something that the original base unit didn't support).

However, very occasionally when, on answering the call, the handset went nuts and just rang continually until the batteries were removed. It was a rare enough bug for me to be able to ignore the problem - it probably happened 5-6 times in the 3-4 years I used the arrangement until the phone's buttons simply stopped working through wear.

So, in answer to your question, if it says GAP on the box, then you should be able to use it with any other GAP compatible base station.

One point though - it's very rare to see a handset being sold separately - they usually come pre-paired with a base station. I've only seen one exception to this - in Comet, I recently saw a BT branded phone being sold as an extension phone to an existing BT base station - but being GAP it should pair with any GAP base station.

Just to add, there are several sites selling extra handsets including our old friend eBay.

I got a lovely pair of philps dect phones, that never claimed to be GAP compatable, I then got a BT Home Hub and Hub Phone gien to me by a friend, I sold the Hub on ebay and have connected the hub phone to my Philips set, even though BT deny that this is possible!

The only problems i have is that the clock does not work on the hub phone as this is controlled from the hub, and if i dont answer the call on the hub phone it sometimes carries on until the ringtone has finished, but then you get used to that after a couple of days! The trick seems to be stay away from the budget brands, my pair of philips only cost £30, it is much cheaper to buy a pair upfront than any other way, it was only an extra £10 to get the pair over the single and £20 if i wanted another handset now!
