I was looking around for a home cinema system that will replace my Sony DAV S300 and I came across the Sony RDRGX7 DVD recorder. I was wondering that since this ain't a home cinema system, would I have to buy a home cinema kit to be able to use my Xbox on the digital input or would I be able to use my Xbox with the DVD recorder??

It is just a DVD player that also records therefore you would need to buy an amp and speackers speratly.

Equate it to buying a seperate Tape deck without an amp and speakers you are not going to get any sound out of it

I have recently hooked up a new Panasonic DVD/VCR combo to my existing Panasonic TV, through the AV2 ssocket. NTL cable feeds to the AV1 socket. There is one more scart connecting the VCR/DVD to Cable.

When watching a DVD or VCR I am unable to select AV1 socket to watch cable as it seems the DVD/VCR is pushing a signal through the cable box and forcing the DVD/VCR picture through AV1 also. This is annoying because the kids sometimes like to have a Video playing to another TV in the house (splitter in roof) and I want to watch cable in the Living Room but this is no longer possible (used to be able to do it on old VCR).

In addition to all this, when watching the Cable box through AV1 (e.g. BBC1 last night) I noticed that the sound signal from the terrestrial analogue service (via RF cable straight from aerial) is audible in the background (can tell because the terrestrial signal feeds a couple of seconds in advance). Any ideas why?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions as I am completely dumbfounded.

Possibly Pin 8 on your SCART. A cheap SCART lead for DVD-Cable with Pin 8 wire cut would test the theory. Pins are usually numbered if you look closely or see here for diagram . The Pin 8 has other uses such as wide-screen switching and for auto-recording which would be lost.
