Hi, my sister is going to Australia for a couple of weeks next year and needs a mobile phone that is going to work there and be able to send text messages and make calls to the UK. i have heard about this triband and quadband business but can anyone tell me more about this and what she needs in order to use a phone in Australia?

You need dual band for just voice & txt, if she's using her current number then don't forget to call the service provider 3 days in advance to activate roaming or just pick up a local SIM at airport, they require an Oz address to activate though - Vodafone is best choice.

oh right because i think she has already bought a phone which is triband and o2. so not good then. so she might have to get a new SIM then?

Triband is fine - dual band is just the lowest class you need. No o2 will work, is she on contract or prepay?

People often use a local SIM as it offers cheaper rates - I've just been over and I used Vodafone AU and also use the SIM back in the UK as it's cheaper to keep in contact with mates back in Oz.

Worth looking at the roaming charges from her provider. When abroad I use a SIM from storytelecom called SIMple. It costs £25 which includes £25 of calls and even though it is a UK number there are no roaming charges for incoming calls and outgoing calls are much cheaper
