I am a complete novice about mobile phones & am thinking on joining Vodafone.
What is a sim free phone & the advantages/ disadvantages over a sim phone?

SIM free basically means that you're buying the phone, without a SIM card and exactly as it left the manufacturers factory.

These require you add your own SIM card.

The benefit is that they're not branded or locked in any way and you get to use the phone exactly how it was intended.

So if I go to my local Vodafone shop & buy the phone (Nokia 1600) I still have to buy a sim card as well?

If you buy it from a vodafone shop it'l be locked to vodafone. But if you go into carphone warehouse and buy it on vodafone it'l be unlocked as they use ulocked phones

A lot of phones on Vodafone and Orange are packaged separately. at the Carphone Warehouse and are therefore locked to the respective network.
