Hi there,
so i'm looking into buying this tv..
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...Wharfedale.htm
and was wondering whether anyone had much experience with Wharfedale as i have never heard of them before.
And just basically whether the picture, sound etc.. are good?
Im not looking to spend more than that amount on a tv as i am only a student
Any help would be appreciated!

Ive also just found this...
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...elevisions.htm

It's just a badge put on cheap sets, usually made by Vestel.

Wharfedale used to be a very reputable loudspeaker manufacturer many years ago, but were taken over a long time back, and now seem to nothing more than a name?.

For a while Euronics (Europes largest independent buying group) had exclusive UK rights to Wharfedale TV's, but the members weren't very interested in the products!.

Indeed, Wharfedale were one of the most respected budget loudspeaker companies in the world. They do still make great loudspeakers but increasingly their name is being associated with cheap Argos TVs. I don't know much about the TVs other than the fact they appear to be cheap and cheerful but it's a bit of a puzzle how they expect the loudspeaker arm of the company to remain untainted by the greater profile (and poor reputation ? )of the TV side.

Goodmans went through a similar process many years ago although their speakers were never as good as Wharfedale's. Don't think many would link Goodmans with good quality speakers these days

There used to be a local record shop here years back, instead of the normal cheap gear he had some really nice stuff.

If you asked him to put a record on for you it went on a Garrard 401, with an SME arm, and a Shure V15. I can't remember the amp he used now (might have been Leak?), but he had a pair of HUGE Goodmans speakers.

So he'd play you the record, it sounded great, so you bought it and took it home - where it sounded rubbish on your own cheap system!.

Rather like HD TV demos today!.

It's probably the exact same TV?, most of the cheap makes are just Vestels.

oh right, god who knew buying a tv would be such hard work!
Im probably just going to go for the bush one, but im confused.. it says HD ready via HDMI input for a start what does that mean?, and also on the wharfedale tv it just says HD ready.. whats the difference? Is it important at all?

It depends what you want from TV. By the sound of it you aren't in to the techy stuff too much and aren't going to spend a heck of a lot of time comparing your picture with other more expensive makes.

Sounds to me like either the Wharfedale or Bush would probably do the job for you

Right, I actually have the Wharfedale TV, albeit not the DVD combi version, just the basic TV because I will be buying a (Wharfedale) HDMI DVD/HDD/PVR combi STB as well.

There is nothing wrong with it at all, the picture quality is excellent, it's easy to use and it does everything I want it to.

The only small downside to it is that the SCART socket is positioned awkwardly on its side and the wrong way up, meaning most cheap SCART leads end up having the cable pointing upwards (if you look at a SCART cable and imagine it connected on it side and the cable pointing upwards you will understand), so the cable tends to fall out. I got round this problem by miraculously finding a cable with the connector on the other way round so this problem doesn't occur.

Thank God I kept the old Pace SCART lead from the Ondigital days

Wharfedale are a well known loudspeaker manufacturer, but Argos use the name under license, just to clarify.

Thanks for that, im much less worried about buying it now
Although i now have YET ANOTHER question.. god im such a technical newbie..
For just the wharfedale tv without freeview or
dvd its £200, with freeview its £230, is it worth spending an extra £30 for freeview when i do already have a freeview box? Will it be a better picture if i use the freeview already on the tv?
Thanks

Well a Freeview box will cost around £30 anyway, makes sense to buy the TV with integrated Freeview as there will be less wire clutter. The problem with that is you would only be able to record the channel you are watching unless you have a PVR.

If you don't have a PVR, it would make sense to go for the integrated Freeview and also plug in the box, so you have a way of watching one digital channel while recording another.

Not necessarily true, decent sets have a "record from TV" so you can record from the freeview channels.

Errr, I just bought a 21" flatscreen CRT from ebay for £7.50. Works a treat. If all you are going to watch is SD channels then I would tend to agree that a decent CRT is the better option if you have the space -- LCD is really the future for HD. Since this was going in a bedroom, with a pre-existing Freeview box I didn't see the point in spending too much.

It seems to me that people like your good self have a golden opportunity. While everyone else is buying LCDs, why don't you locate a good used 28" or so CRT for next to no money. No-one wants them any more so they sell dirt-cheap. And if it blows after a year or two, shucks, you only paid maybe £50!!
