i have just moved into a new house.

The house has a BT box in the hall and I'm guessing was connected for the previous occupier. As i didnt have any landline at my previous property BT tell me I have to sign up for 12 months to get connected again. In an era where we are supposed to be able to "choose" providers this seems a bit harsh.

The reason it could be a problem is it seems to me a lot of the phone/broadband packages have line rental charged by the provider of the calls/broadband but i'm guessing BT would charge me a ternination fee if i was to move to those providers e.g talk talk international 2

or have i got it all wrong.....

Welcome to the DS forums lmd0807.

The line provision market has now been opened up and any of the companies now offering line rental (LLU or WLR) could install/reconnect a line. They (even BT) have to employ Openreach to do so and the problem is most companies are not prepared to pay Openreach the £103.40 they charge (preferring, like Talk Talk does, to 'cherry pick' those with a working BT line).

However, you can 'buy yourself out of' a 12 month contract with BT for a maximum of £70 but, personally, I think people are mad to do so. Although Talk Talk (and others') offers may appear tempting, losing the ability to route your voice telephone calls via cheaper providers is lost if you pay line rental other than to BT.

Additionally, a BT landline allows you the widest choice of ISP.

Bear in mind that BT are likely to charge you £124.99 to reconnect the line.

Reading THIS THREAD may assist you.

A wise choice IMHO.

Then again, there's no need to throw money away - so you might like to consider '6-steps' to reducing costs for BT residential landline subscribers too.
