My very first phone I got was a PAYG and this number was with 02. This was about 10 years ago, and for most of that time I was with 02, but last year connected to vodaphone and carried the phone number over to that network from 02.

Now for various reason, I haven't topped up this number and now i've just found out that vodaphone have destroyed it, meaning it will probably be used by someone else in the future. My phone number that everyone I've ever met knows I have, is now gone.

Is this standard practice for all networks?

Yes, although I believe the period may be slightly different on other networks, on Vodafone its 12 months.

i thought it was 180 days for Vodafone, yest it is a standard practice you need to make a charageable call during every 180 days to keep it active

it is in your t&c's

it surely can't be your main number if you haven't made a call for 180 days???

That was my thought exactly, it can hardly be important if it hasn't been used for six months.

I too agree with that, If its your mobile number you use as your main one, Sure there will be chargable calls on there?

but for whatever reason. Ring Vodafone and try and see what they can do.

Rang them but they won't give it me back. I'll just add them to the companies that I'll never use ever again, and that'll i'll advice everyone never to use them also.

All networks do the same. So it's not just Vodafone. It can't be that important if you've not used it for ages. And if you were expecting texts to come through or whatever, the network cancels them after a week to 10 days if the phone hasn't received them.

If you read your Ts&Cs it's in there. No one's fault but your own I'm afraid, Vodafone's not to blame this time.

Uhhh hellllllllloooo!!

YOU didn't use the number for bloody ages.

It's in the t&c's, get contract and pay every month or payg and pay the minimums.

You can't expect companies to keep things open for you indefinitely even if you stop using them for months.

Oh goody, it's in the T&Cs so everything's ok?

I remember bank charges being in the T&Cs, are they ok?

The nazis probably had some interesting T&Cs, were they ok?

T&Cs can sod off, Vodacrap have taken a piece of my life. People who I don't have contact with anymore, but may one day want to look me up still had that number.

I am so annoyed right now, I'm thinking of setting up a website dedicated to making people know that this happens.

HEY, DID YOU KNOW...

Apparently if you don't switch on a computer for some time, Microsoft automatically uninstalls Windows... but it's ok... IT'S IN THE T&C's lol

They're a business, what do you expect?

You weren't paying for a service, you can't expect a service FOC.

If it was that important, you'd have used it.

Every network does it, it's no one's fault but YOURS.

Of course it's my fault. I presumed vodafone were a respectable company to deal with.

They're not; they are unhelpful, snide shysters.

You can't blame them though, once a number is disconnected, it's disconnected...

They are, they're fantastic.

I've been with them for years, like you, they've always been great but expensive.

I now have Vodafone and T-Mobile contracts.

As boring as it sounds - read the T&C's in future. They don't usually re use a number for a long time however if you were to call them up they will reconnect you however a charge of £35 is normally applied and I'd lose the attitude if you were to contact them. (you need your SIM card as it has the serial number which helps the process)

Yes if you had read them you wouldn't have lost your number you don't use that often.

If you don't have contact with them then why worry? If its that important just text them your new number.

I am so annoyed right now, I'm thinking of setting up a website dedicated to making people know that this happens.
You will have to read the T&C's as it will need to be maintained or it will be shut down.

Some people will just not accept that they are at fault and just blame the network.

I mean, if you don't turn up at work for 6 months they should keep your job open on the off chance that you'll return? It's just like that. Why would Vodafone keep your line open when you're not using it and when someone else could be using it?

Perhaps dmuk would like to suggest how long a phone company should keep an unused line active?

I agree with everyone here. I dont like vodafone but this aint their fault in anyway whatsoever. They were doing what all networks do and after 6 months cancelling an unused number. Funny how you dont use your phone for ages then piss and moan when its cut off.

Totally Agree,

Its Standard really. I would expect a main number that you use like this would have made some calls or a text or so in 6months.

I was under the impression that you never owned the mobile number anyway?! I thought you rented the number from the network provider, paying rent as part of the call costs.

Its clear the OP is just bitter about his own incompetence. Sorry you've lost your number but as EVERYONE has said, if it was that important you really should have been more careful. If you'd lost your phone because you couldn't remember where you'd left it would you be blaming the Network provider (probably)!

If you haven't made the effort to contact any of the people on who only have that number then why should they contact you. I'm sure if your being this neurotic about your own stupidity then I wouldn't be holding my breath on them ever calling.

I also take it that you have little if any credit on the phone or you'd be ranting on about theft.

So tell us, why should any provider keep a number available indefinitely without you paying them a penny?

Get over it, buy a new number and text the people who you hope will someday contact you, with your new number. simple!

This is what I thought too. I remember reading something along the lines of "the SIM is the property of the network"

Ofcom own UK numbers technically, I believe - they then allocate blocks of them for use by mobile networks - networks then issue use of the number(s) to end users.

As per terms and conditions of most networks the service must be used to make or receive a call ‘every now and then’ otherwise they will disconnect your number. Generally networks will enable the number again for an admin fee.

I’ve got SIM cards lying around which have been there for ages – some still work – some have been disconnected.
