virgin signal

My son is on holiday on a narrow boat travelling fron Guilford to Windsor, he is now three days into the trip and so far has only managed once to get a signal on his mobile. He is on virgin.
Both my parents are with him and my dad is on vodaphone and my mum on O2 and both haven't had any problems with thier signal.
Does this sound right for Virgin?

It all depends purely on how many mast sites are in the area. Also some phones havn't got very effiecient antennas so that can cause problems in weaker signal areas.

I also imagine that with being on a narrow boat, they will be very low down making it hard for the phone to find a signal.

T-Mobile (virgin use T-Mobile) have the worst coverage in the UK (i believe)

T-Mobile only use 1800Mhz or higher frequencies, which can't reach as far from a mast as the 900Mhz which Vodafone and o2 use.

If you're travelling around to places outside of cities and towns, Vodafone or o2 probably have the best coverage.

He has the Touch 7 on the virgin network.

We have done a fair bit of travelling and never had a problem getting a signal before. Where he is now ( on a river on outskirts of London ) you would have thought the signal would be good.

ps. thanks for the other replies too
