I haven't paid my bt phone bill for some time and when ringing my number it just has a continious tone as in the a disconnected phone line which is true. How much extra is the reconnection charge?

Have you just come upon this by accident? Haven't they written to you (possibly several times) to notify you of any action? I'd check one of the letters. Btw, why didn't you pay? Have phone, will pay no?

I should be free as there should be no work however they will want a deposit from you up front due to your non payment.

And what happens when you pick up the phone - do you get a dial tone?

lol @ Heinz.

Silent85 -Your line has been made temporarily out of service (TOS) and it will cost to get it put back on.

Erm.. If I'm not mistaken, if within 28 days of non receipt of payment, after reminders and such have been sent, then restrictions will be put in place. BT may then take legal action to recover the debt.

Check the site www.bt.com for information.

Free reconnection is not possible if you were disconnect for non-payment.

Depends how far the follow up process has gone.

If the line is just TOS then you are looking at £23.50 inc VAT. If it has gotten so far the contract has been cancelled by BT you are looking at £35.25 inc VAT and the possibility they may ask you for a deposit to reconnect the service.

With me they only sent the usual 2 bills, I pd one part over the phone, the person taking the payment said when I asked for an authorisation code that you don't get one & then the next thing I knew they had disconnected the service, I went bolistic at them and they reconnected me for nothing.
I am now with Toucan who are superb.

There is work at the exchange to put the line back on, and also as far as administration & billing is concerned to reactivate the account or to set it back up.

Quite simply, if you don't/can't pay the bills, don't have the service. And unless the fault is purely BT's, then you must expect some form of reconnection charge to be made.
