Hi

I have a virgin (ex ntl) line, and at the moment use binatone phones which work fine with caller ID.

I am thinking of getting a BT phone with built in answerphone because we arent very impressed by virgins 1571 service.

I remember reading somewhere that BT use a different type of caller ID to virgin. so my question is, if i brought a BT phone (want a BT one, much better quality) would the caller ID still work???

Hit and miss.

Yes, cable uses a different version of Caller Display, however a couple of areas use the BT version, cable were playing catchup with Caller Display and as they mostly used different equipment and adopted different standards.

All Caller Display phones sold in the UK will work with the BT standard (ETSI FSK with PR) some phones also work with the Bellcore USA standard - the standard used on most cable areas.

Many BT phones handle both (I have two BT phones that handle both) some only handle the BT standard.

Crazy that cable decided on a differing standard instead of copying BT.

As for BT phones being better quality, again that is hit and miss, it all depends on who the actual manufacturer is, some are high quality - some of BTs best phones were Siemens made, BT also have quite a lot of extremely badly made el-cheapo Chinese made phones - BT Decor are well known for been dreadful.

In the User Manual available via: http://www.cordless-phones.uk.com/us...aragon-500.pdf

It mentions under help:

Calls from the SMS server cause the ringer to chirp

Cable Networks (typically NTL/Telewest) deliver a single burst of ringing before the data which identifies the call as a text.

As they mention this, I'd say the phone must be OK with cable, as they don't say it doesn't work on cable line but gives you details of why the phone rings first then the SMS comes through, as SMS on the landline uses the Caller Display function, I'd say this more or less confirms that this will work on a cable line.

With BT Caller Display the Caller ID is sent before the first ring, so if you are sitting by your phone you will see it light up and display the name before it rings, this also allows SMS to go straight to the In Box and the SMS tone to be played.

On most cable networks the Caller ID is sent after the first ring, so when a call first comes through it will show 'Unknown' or 'External' first then when it receives the Caller ID data then the name will show up. Also means when an SMS comes through it will first ring the line until the phone sees that it's an SMS and then sends the SMS to the in box and sounds a tone.

Cable uses the BT Text SMS service, so you set the phone up following the BT Text instructions.
