Getting Unlocking Codes From Networks
I was wondering what it is like to get unlocking codes for pay as you go phones off all networks. ie. what fee they charge or how long you have to keep the phone for.
A few years ago I asked Virgin for the unlocking code for my phone and they gave it to me free of charge. one2one used to charge £40. And recently my mate tried to get an unlocking code for his sony from T-mobile and they said he would have to top up with £20 and then wait fro 3 months before they woulg ive it to him. AFAIK o2 phones are not locked. What about Vodafone and Orange??? |

The unlocks in markets are not(usally) done properly.. instead of producing a code (usally) they change the IMEI of the phone.
Changing the IMEI of a phone is highly Illegal |

Changing the IMEI of a phone is highly Illegal Hardly anyone changed the IMEI numbers even before it was made illegal. This has no effect on the unlock code at any rate! Unless you reflash the the phone completley. For most modern phones the unlock codes can now be found using software to genarate the unlock code. The key to finding the code is the IMEI number.

Thanks for your replies,
The reason I asked is that I am thinking about buying a sony ericsson T610 and I have not heard about anyone who has unlocked one, and I have also read on other boards that this phone will not work after it has been unlocked and the warranty becomes void. I know it is easy to get nokias and some other makes unlocked almost anywhere but it looks like the safest way with the T610 is to get the code off the network. Also, do Orange definately give you the unlocking code straight away for £20 ?? |

Needed a new charger for my Nokia 3330 One Orange store wanted to sell me a £14.99 "Travel Charger" -no, I said; I wanted an original. The second I tried said come back next week and they'd give me one for free if they had a spare. The third I tried sold me one second had for £2. Have had similar problems with Orange CS where different people give different advice at different times. |

At least Orange CS have been consitant over the last month with my constant badgering of them over the lack of service and GPRS going screwey.
Even down to "Our Engineers are aware of the problem, and expect it to be fixed shortly, unfortunatly we don't know exactly when" - and this went on for 4 weeks ![]() Last two days it's been fine, but GPRS coverage is cack. We have 40 7650 camera phones for our staff, and I have at least 10 calls daily when they can't access our WAP site for signing in / out or sending photos in - as GPRS has gone wrong yet a-bleeding-gain ![]() Mind you, before i've been on the phone to one advisor, and asked for clarification - only for their second reason to be TOTALLY different to the first.

Orange an T-Mobile phones are locked to their respective networks. O2 and Vodafone mobiles are sim-free and can be used on any network. I don't think there's and great risk in getting your phone unlocked at a shop.

So I topped up my mobile and I still have a had no response, do want to know when I phoned them? Friday May 23rd..yes that is just a little bit longer than what I should have to wait. I'm just getting bored of ringing them every Friday of every week and getting the same old reply: 'Oh, I don't know whats going on there, I'll put another note on here to say you called' and still no call. Then I got so sick of waiting I asked them to refund the money that I had put onto my phone and they said they can't, I asked why and they said 'we just can't ' Has anyone had a similar experience?

Well, i've got a Vodafone (Was listed for t-mobile though) and its unlocked. All Nokias should be GSM and unlocked, but Orange are the only provider i think that still lock them to their network.

GSM = Global System for Mobile communications
It just means that they are 'unlocked' to any network , and work on all european and worldwide (if tri band) frequences.
