Does anyone know whether Joan was ever talked about in EE before? Is this the first time we've been told Pat has a sister?

Pat told Billy about her shortly after Janet was born.

Introducing a charactor who previously was never even mentioned is a trait of EE. Just look at the Mitchels, every few years some new lot come along who have never been seen/mentioned before.

This is so true. Correct me if I am wrong, but when Simon Wicks came on the scene, wasn't it established that he was Pat's only son? Then David turns up some years later.

Also, all soaps make the mistake of giving characters a finite number of children and then years later bring in another kid that has never been mentioned before.

But the worse case by far has to be in Corrie when Mike Baldwin's nephew and family when for years Mike had been an only child. My guess is they came from a parallel universe where mike did have a brother.

Does it matter? Do you mention all of your family members all the time? Especially this sister of pats, obviously a sore subject and she did say mentioning her when she was growing up became less and less..until she wasn't mentioned again.

Pat's sister was taken away to the asylum when Pat was just four after which her family pretended she never existed. I assume Pat never mentioned her because she was ashamed of what had happened and because her sister was more or less a 'family secret'. She did however mention her sister after Janet was born and even then she couldn't admit that the girl she was talking about was her sister.

I agree. Its not like you have to list every member of your family to everyone you meet is it!

If that was the case we'd be here all day and night with me! half I haven't even seen for years.

so its safe to say she was talking about her own sister that time

We only see the 'highlights' of what the characters get up to. We don't see them going to the toilet, do we?
They do plenty of other things off screen!

Just look at Jim Branning. In his loveless marriage he managed to father 3 sons and 3 daughters! The 3 daughters are rarely mentioned other than Carol and he's forgotten about his racist partner in crime son and now seems to only have Max...until Jack turns up soon! It's odd thinking Max had this traumatic childhood with Jim despite there also being 5 siblings.

I'll correct you, because you're wrong. Lou was often to be heard talking about her grandsons that didn't visit often enough.

David Wicks was mentioned years before the character appeared.

Also Mike's son Adam was supposed to be aborted but he was brought back, alive.

David character even appeared in the 80's Eastenders book heroes, even then he was full of himself and he had no time for Pete and the rest of the Beale family.

They're doing that with the Brannings in Eastenders. On the website it states that Max had two sisters- Carol and April- and that was it. Now they are bringing in Jack- Max's brother who has presumably just sprung into existance.

I'm confused about this sister. When we saw that photograph, it didn't look that old to me, and her and her husband didn't look old.

How old was she meant to be, and when was the photo taken? Didn't she get married in the 60s?
