Well congrats to the e'dale team for being the first soap to have a gay wedding and a healthy mic of gay charactors over the years. Even though I dont watch it myself, credit whier credit is due.

It really dose put EE and corrie to shame when it comes to gay charactors.

I'm remembering the super one hour special of Doctors last April 2006 when they had the wedding of Greg and boyfriend Rico.

I remember it especially because I had just come back from 2 months in the USA and all the hurrah about Brokeback Mountain was still going on.

How refreshing it was to have the above wedding as the first thing I saw soap wise on my return home.

I think EE has had far more gay characters in the past than E'dale did, I don't remember E'dale having any then, they just don't today for some reason.

I agree to an extent but there is hardly if any chemistry between these two gay characters youd actually think they were brothers or best mates rather than lovers to be honest.

Didn't Zoe Tate have a "wedding" to her partner some years ago, can't remember her name - think she was a solicitor or something??

Emmerdale have certainly had more gay characters than any of the other soaps as far as I know.. Back in the 90's they had a blessing between Zoe and her lesbian lover.

Agreed- they rarely touch each other.

It is pointless them getting married. Paul will probably be having a fling with Grayson sooner or later.

I'm afraid not. Emmerdale has had lots of gay and bisexual characters over the years, probably more than you would expect to see in a small Yorkshire village. EastEnders has had few and far between...

Yes. I seem to remember it ended in high drama as she was torn between two lovers...

Yes, she had her relationship with Emma, the interior designer blessed in the church.

I don't think this is true at all, to my my knowledge Emmerdale has had lots of gay/bi characters!

Zoe Tate,
Emma the interior designer,
Sophie the nanny,
Charity Dingle,
Jason Kirk,
Gavin (Bernice's bisexual fiance),
Joe the Australian,
Paul,
Ivan,
Johnny,
Grayson.

Plus, the experimentation between Debbie and Jasmine which was very realistic. I've known situations like that myself.

Examples I can remember in EastEnders are

The gay couple from the 80s,
Binny and Della,
Tony Hills,
Simon Raymond,
Dr Fred,
Sonia and Naomi.

Plus Emmerdale had Frankie, the driver who was with Zoe for a while.

Didn`t Emmerdale have the young lad who lived at the farm where Andy is. I can`t remember his name he was the lad from The Full Monty.

Either that or they do the old soap chestnut- Wedding day, Johnny is happy, but Paul- who has been trying and nearly failing to fight his feelings for Grayson- gurns at the camera when he thinks nobody's looking. They get to the altar, registrar asks them if they want to marry the other person, Johnny is very happy and says yes, but Paul pauses for a second, before saying that he's so very sorry but he can't do it and runs out of the church, leaving shocked guests in his wake.

See how easy this prediction stuff is?

You also had Frankie's girlfriend Maggie and a guy called Greg, Jason Kirk's friend. Jason's ex-boyfriend Joe Fisher, had another ex-boyfriend, Howard.

There was also a bisexual, or closeted gay guy who was married and came onto Paddy when Zoe, Adam, Paddy, Frankie and Jason went out clubbing.

Emma Nightingale, Zoe's ex-girlfriend, had another ex-girlfriend called Susie, who Zoe dumped Emma for. After living with Zoe for a while, I think Susie left Zoe for someone else.

She was better than Emma, Emma was seriously dull.

Hmm, this is an ancient plotline to be talking about!

Lol. It is, but amazing to think, that of all the soaps its Emmerdale that did all of this as opposed to Corrie or "groundreaking" EastEnders. Especially the early stuff with Zoe and Emma etc, really brave for a family show in 1995 or whenever it was.

I hate the fact that when EastEnders does a gay couple, it is always a couple.

They never have gay characters on their own (except Dr Fred of course) or a character that's had more than 1 partner of the same sex on the show.

You're so right, in reality a lot of gay people actually have gay friends, and meet partners in gay bars/clubs etc, not on their doorstep.

Corrie started off so well, I loved the idea of Katy going out with Karl on the gay scene in Manchester, inviting Sarah along, them meeting Sean on the gay scene etc.

It was very realistic, but after the big Karl/Todd plot was over, they keep Sean on and he never mentions Canal Street (or Karl or any of his old friends from the scene) ever again.

Instead he slots nicely into life on the Street and only ventures out "clubbing" occassionally with Vi or on an unlikely and appallingly contrived night out with Steve, Lloyd and Jamie (as if!), purely so he could meet Sonny and Steve could see them "kissing".

Naomi in EE just has to be one of the worst gay characters too. What a waste! Her sole purpose was to shag Sonia, so why did they bother keeping her for so long after she'd endured that ordeal?
