Blackberry - Worth it?
bluechang

I am nearing the end of my contract and have been having a look around at new phones n the various different networks. I have come across the blackberry pearl (8100) I quite like the look of it, and was wondering what the lovely people of DS thought.

Is it worth the additional cost over and above the standard contract price? Or would you sou suggest something different? If so what?

I have had a pearl for months and think it is great. It's only worth getting the BB tariff if having instant email is important to you.

so the blackberry will work without having to pay for the bb tariff? the way it was explain earlier was that it was a requirement if i took that handset

It will work fine as phone if you don't take the BB tariff. Or you can just take the BB tariff and use it as an email only device.

Can you access your email without paying the BB tariff?

Sort of defeats the reason for having one doesn't it? I guess you could use the mobile internet (which you will be charged for) to access webmail. But the raison d'etre of a Blackberry is instant email.

I agree, I got the missus a BB Curve and she loves it.

It is best to get BIS (Blackberry Internet Server) then you only pay 1 flat fee a month. It's £10 on o2, I'm sure Ricardodaforce will be able to tell you what it costs on orange

£7.05/month assuming it's on an 18 month contract. Currently the first 6 months are free.

The pearl is a nice phone, although I got annoyed with it only having GPRS and a crap camera.... it also hasn't got the best media player... if your not looking for a good mobile email client (as in not taking the BB sub) you'd be better looking at other handsets.

Mine runs on Edge too. The new Pearl will have a 2 mp camera, ungraded multi-media capabilities and wi-fi.

Can you recommend a good handset with a good mobile email client?

Hi

Do you know if Orange offer a 'bundle where by you can send International Texts cheaper than the standard 40p a text?

(O2 have a scheme where you pay a one off £5 and all texts are priced at the same as Uk texts there after)

It's £2 or £2.50 a month - can't remember which, but it offers pretty big savings.

you are required to have the Blackberry APN on your account in order to use any services that use GPRS

without it you will only be able to call and text

If you write lots of emails you might want a bb with a full qwerty keyboard, such as the 8800, less fashionable but more practical if email is your need.
