Hi,

I have just ordered Sky HD and was trying to find a surround sound 5.1 system to go with it.

Can anyone tell me what type of system I need or reccomend one in the £30-£60 price range,

Thanks in advance

Rob

Further to my above post, I have been looking around at a few and they have RCA input.

Is this ok to get the DD 5.1? as sky hd has a optical out???

You can try a place like richer sounds

but I doubt you will get one for £30-£60 you may need to look at £100+

you might be cheaper buying a second hand hi-fi with surround sound or dvd player with 5.1 built in and speakers

£30-60 won't get you much, if anything really for 5.1

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5136120.htm

That is 3.1 for £50, but the brand and sound won't be exactly mind blowing.

5.1 that is £80.

You could try searching second hand, but you will need to have a bigger budget than that probably.

No point in spending good money on an HD TV and Sky HD then attaching something that will only have you cryingin no time - get a good 2nd hand AV amp and speakers - try eBay.

Went out today and got the accoustic solutions system from argos.

In order for it to work with the Sky HD box I am correct in saying that I will only have to connect the box to the main unit via an optical audio lead?

If so are these supplied with the HD box? If not where can I get one form and for roughly how much?

Thanks again

Sorry for all the newbie questions

They're about a tenner from Maplins, about fifteen from Currys or Comet, six quid on Amazon:

In fact, three quid on Amazon:

Ok guys, i've been trying various postitions for the speakers and for the best positions the cables on the speakers are too short.

Would it be possible to join connect extra speaker cable without losing any sound quality?

oh and another thing (sorry guys).

My speaker cable, one is balck and one is black with a white stripe, which is pos and which is neg??

Also on the back of my subwoofer, it does not show where pos and neg go, it only has the coloured clips of the co-ordinating speaker to go in to on one side and black clips down the other.

any suggestions

sorry if i sound like an utter dim-wit !!

For the length of cable you are likely to add you are very unlikely to notice any degredation, you can either joint the cable or get a new cable the length you need

Use the cable with the white stripe tracer as your + positive & put this to the red connections (clips) this will ensure that all speakers are in phase.

Depending upon which cable you buy it might identify one core with either a stripe (tracer) like you have now which can be in various colours, or it may have a rib or ridge on one core, or it may have the manufacturers name down one core. The same applies to all types i.e. they all act as a tracer. Paul.

Poundland were selling a 30m roll of speaker cable recently - not sure if they still are. I used some to wire my centre speaker and it sounds fine.

To be honest it's probably overkill! just done a quick ebay search & found this which will be perfect:
