Police have urged EastEnders producers to educate viewers about cold-call share scams.

Officers have become concerned about the rising amount of people being tricked into buying worthless shares over the phone.

They hope that an EastEnders plot which focuses on the scams will help to raise awareness of the problem and prevent people from being duped.

DCS Steve Wilmot, of City of London Police, told The Sun: "We have had heart-wrenching stories of people remortgaging their homes who have lost the lot."

It may be a good storyline for some of the older un-used characters.

Eg. Charlie Slater, Dot Cotton, Pat Butcher, Patrick Trueman etc

I think it'd be a great storyline for someone like Shirley, seeing as she has very little to lose. Could lead into a homeless storyline or her being taken in by Pat!

I think this would be a good storyline for Charlie and Mo Slater - they've been underused for a long while.

I don't think that cops should be asking TV Entertainment programmes to raise an "issue". Fine if it's in a documentry or if it would be certainly character led but I hate it when certain organizations are seen to be demanding certain storylines.

Why do they want EastEnders, and not one of the other soaps?

Didn't they already do it with Billy and little Mo?
They were in some scam anyway.

Because it is the London police who requested it. Most of the other soaps are set in other places.

I think a younger character should be the victim if this storyline happens. I'm sure there's a stereotype that it's mostly elderly people who fall victim to these sorts of things.

Most of the characters in EE do low paid jobs and wouldn't exactly be candidates for share scammers.

Despite that, most of them seem to have endless cash to spend in the pub, but that's just EE being slightly out of touch with reality as usual.

I think Ian Beale is a good candidate for this plot as he is always looking to make a quick buck

Also EE appeals to a broader demographic eg teens and BME people more likely to watch.

The full quote from DCS Wilmot mentions EE, Corrie, Emmerdale and the Archers.
So it could be anyone from those soaps.....

Yeah, it does seem odd that DS have specifically mentioned EE - the Telegraph article quotes him as saying: "We don't know which soap yet, but something like EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale or The Archers."

I thoguht Billy was involved in that scam-it wasn't that long ago it would be stupid to have another story similar to that (especially if it was Billy again!)
