Most of the people advertising this dvd recorder list dual digital tuner - has this machine really got a dual digital tuner or only 1 digital and 1 soon to be obsolete analogue tuner??

If it has 2 digital tuners can it record 2 programmes at once?

I own an HXD1070 and it has 2 tuners!

1 tuner for DVB-T and another 1 tuner for Analogue.

Unlike some previous SONY offerings where you had to choose which of the two tuners to use in the set up menus with this machine both can be operational (Why with DVB-T you would want to use the analogue tuner I don't know!!!)

I think you need to be aware of a problem with the HXD1070 in that recording via the EPG with DVB-T is not that good. There appears to be a bug in the machine that deletes entries from the "EPG recorder list"

The same fault also appears to exist on the HXD870

I hope my post has been of use

I presume therefore you can record 1 channel from the digital tuner and 1 from the analogue tuner at the same time??

Your bit about the entries going missing worries me as this is to replace a dvd recorder and a tivo (tivo is 100% reliable, always records what you set it to without fail).

However I cannot afford the grief that would be caused if 'er indoors missed her programmes.

I have never tried. In fact I haven't even bothered to set up the analogue tuner. But I suspect that you can't record from both tuners at the same time, if you could then the hand book would highlight this fact...well at least you would like to think it would!

There is various treads at www.avforums.com that discuss all sorts of problems with the HXD870. The HXD870 appears to run on the same platform as the HXD1070 as they both share the same users handbook. i.e. functionality is identical.

As far as I am concerned my HXD1070 is still on trial. Only when I am happy with it will I stop setting my Technisat Digicorder for programs that I want to time shift.

When you say recordings disappear - how does this manifest itself.

ie after you have set a recording from the epg - does it stay in the 'to record' list but not record then disappear after the due time or does it just disappear prior to the due time - if so is there a pattern ie length of time before due time?

What appears to happen is this:

You set a timer with the EPG use the "Guide" on the remote.

Then you can review the timer (and any others previously set) with "Timer" on the remote and all looks OK.

Next you place and machine in standby and wait.

You can, if you wish, power up the machine again and check the "timer list" and all still looks OK.

However if you then leave the machine over night (not unreasonable if you want to record a program in say 2 days time) when you go back into the "Timer" list the entry may or may not have disappeared.

It appears that EPG set timers only disappear overnight. i.e a timer set at say 10.00am for later the same day will work. A timer set at say 10.00pm for a program at 08.00am the next day may very well not be recorded.

If you wait until the timer has been (should have been) executed you would expect to find the recorded program in the "Title list".

However if the program has not been recorded then it will not appear in the "Title list" nor will it still be in the "Timer" list. Bascially disappeared.... gone completely!!!

From a thread on www.avforums.co.uk it is reported that SONY are now aware of this fault in the HXD780 and have a fix. All they need now is a slot on the OTA engineering channel to download the fix to machines.

Given that the HXD780 is in the same family as the HXD1070 I think I will now contact SONY to enquire if the fix has been produced for this machine also.
