Press pause on my Sony 710 last night...press un-pause 2 minutes later & it's dead as a dodo !

Obviously changed batteries, done a reset - no joy

Anyone had the same problems ?

Might be then a new remote & looking on google the prices are around £50

Any recommendations..maybe one of them universal remotes that controls everything - would that work ?

I would have thought that a universal remote would control most of the functions on the 710, but probably not all of them.

I recently bought my parents a Sony one-for-all remote. It will control the vast majority of functions on their Sony TV, Sony DVD player, Sony VCR and Pioneer ex-ITV Digital box, but there are a few that it simply doesn't have buttons for! None of these are, however, critical functions.

On the 710, the critical function that a one-for-all remote probably won't cover is switching from HDD to DVD and vice-versa.

Whilst you can normally teach a one-for-all remote commands that aren't preset into it, they will have random buttons attached to them (albeit that they will be the random buttons of your choice!), and you will also need the original remote to function in order to teach the commands to the one-for-all.

If your remote is completely dead, you might need to bite the bullet and pay for an original replacement to access all functions properly - unless you don't mind an occasional walk across the room to press the buttons on the front of the 710 from time to time.

Good grief, that's not cheap!

Sony used to sell spares direct a few years ago. I ordered a few simple things (parts to replace damaged facias) from them and the service was pretty good. I don't have the phone number to hand (it wasn't one of the usual Sony numbers - I think a helpful Customer Adviser in a Sony Centre gave me a note of it), but someone might be able to assist?

When I thought some more about the remote's functionality, however, it struck me that a one-for-all remote might also have problems accessing the System Menu, Title List and, possibly, EPG functions without the original remote functioning to allow the one-for-all to be programmed.

Whilst I do think you're likely to need an original remote, I would try to find another source. That price seems excessive.

Looks like a HXD860 remote, presently at £10 and should work with 710 but there is no record pause button (see previous posts)

Or try a "sony DVD recorder remote" search on Ebay. This will bring up about 5 or 6 of different types, some new.

Hopefully this will give you a cheaper route.

How silly do i feel

Last night, worked out it could not be the remote as it was still controlling my TV (ie volume etc)...opened the remote where are the rec functions are & low & rehold the LINE INPUT selector had moved from line 3 to line 2

I do feel a wally but at least I never shelled out £70 odd for a new one.

A salutory lesson! The sticker is still (just about) on mine, specifically so that I can't make that mistake!
