OK I am now fairly sure which LCD I want to buy but it doesn't have a swivel stand!!!

This would be essential in my L shaped lounge where the TV sits on the inner corner of the "L"

Does anyone know of the existence of an adapter that I have no name for but consists of 2 large glass discs mounted one above the other with a bearing in between. I have tried Google with no success. It would obviously have to support a 40" LCD.

Any ideas gladly received.

You might try DIY stores and kitchen places - there's a fairly common old dinner table component called a 'lazy susan' which might do what you want?.

Thanks Nigel your suggestion has triggered another table centre name from the depths of my memory!"Dumb Waiter"

As long as it is robust enough to hold the LCDTV.

However have to make the comment - some manufacturers include a built in swivel base why don't they all it must cost peanuts?

Are they afraid that including a swivel stand admits that viewing angles on LCD are not all they are cracked up to be?

I though a 'dumb waiter' was a hand operated lift?.

Just checked on Wikipedia:

The term "Lazy Susan" made its first written appearance in a Vanity Fair advertisement for a "Revolving Server or Lazy Susan" in 1917. Prior to that time they were called dumbwaiters.

As long as it is robust enough to hold the LCDTV.

A 'lazy susan' is just two plates seperated by ball bearings.

A quick google soon finds this one

It's all to reduce costs - Sony ones used to pretty well all do it, then the cheaper U series didn't, and some others since haven't bothered either.

Hi Nigel

Yes I think you are right about the "Dumb waiter"!

I always associated "Lazy Susan" with Tupperware plastic version as former wife's mother was an Area Organizer for them in late 60's/ early 70's.

However link looks promising - thanks. Now to persuade (silver) wife that 40D3000 will bring new viewing experience to our lounge!

Whilst I appreciate your proffesion we are all entitled to our opinion; I'm sure there are lots of TV guys that like Samsung & on a personal note I have numerous Samsung products all of which perform perfectly & have for years! I have also previously purchased several High End Sony pieces of equipment that have broken down quickly despite me liking this brand. In fact I recall buying a Sony Nicam Video for £399 & it took 6 before I got one that worked! 4 from one shop & two from another; both shops said they had never known it before on the 5th occasion I insited that we plug it in in the shop & try it; that one went up in a puff of smoke when switched on!

I had a minor issue with my Samsung in the first few days with regard to HDMI between the TV & Samsung 1080P upscaling DVD Player ( I could not Get Anytime to work correctly) called Samsung & an engineer called sorted it very quickly, in my opinion it does exactly what it says on the tin!

That's absolutely fine, so long as you're happy.

Incidentally i'm not a huge Sony fan either.

The issues i have with Samsung is that EVERY model LCD they've released has had issues of some kind, whether it be hardware, software or a combination of both.

I've had to deal with their customer services too, although not the worst they do leave a lot to be desired.

I don't have any issues with Samsung as a company, i own a Samsung DSLR and numerous other pieces of their hardware, which i'm very happy with.

We sell a fair amount of Samsung LCD's, plus a few Plasma's as well, and to be honest we've found them pretty reliable.

I'm surprised.

The R41/51 had issues with randomly exploding PSU boards and 'GREEN' HD issues.

The R7x series had faulty PSU/Tuner issues.

The R/M8x series has HDMI 'Judder' issues.

They all have "piss poor" sound issues, too...
