Pocket TV when analogue switched off..?
I have a Casio LCD Pocket TV. When analogue TV is switched off in 200... does anyone know what will happen to the many thousands of Pocket TV owners?
Some Pocket TVs have inputs that would allow Freeview boxes etc to be connected but many have no inputs. Major retailers are still selling Pocket TVs unashamedly and I've tried asking at my local Currys for a response... er... I feel that these TVs would become superfluous to requirements. I do not want my TV to become obsolete. Admittedly, I don't watch alot of TV whilst mobile but occasionly I use it and it's nice to have the choice. Maybe the intelligensia know that we'll all be paying to view TV on 3G and would prefer that we pay inordinate sums of money for things that we now take for granted... If anyone has any links or info on this matter then I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |

The answer is amazingly simple really and I think you have answered it in your question.
1. Pocket TV's with no input method - become obsolete 2. Pocket TV's with input - umm, well unless your going to lug a Sky or freeview receiver under one arm as well as a satellite dish or massive aerial under the other then yes again it's obsolete. |

Thanks to all the pi**takers that bothered responding. And further thanks to the idle hijackers who wish to turn my thread into a farce.
I was making a serious point actually! I've owned at least 3 Pocket TVs to the tune of a few hundred pounds and I feel like I'm probably going to be short-changed. If I voice a concern over a matter then it's my right; I don't expect to be ridiculed. Someone pointed out that I have probably answered my own question and that's self-evident as my line of questioning was indeed hypothetical. Trying to gain an omnipotent superiority over someone, for something so ridiculous, is just krass. Unless you've got something interested to add don't bother! Whatsmore, if you have a digital box in your home, then you can send footage via a reciever to any TV in your home. Everyone knows that... I actually use one to send digital all around my home. So any ludicrous notion of lugging heavy equipment around is also nulled! |

Lots of threads turn into farce and I sometimes add to them but usually when they necessitate it.

I believe a bit of gentle humour was injected into the thread, I sincerely apologise to those without a sense of humour.

I think it's pretty clear that analogue TV transmissions aren't going to be switched off very soon..... the 2006 - 2010 date that's been mentioned a lot seems very optimistic and rather unlikely..... the TV trade reckons more like 2015 for a full turn off of analogue (possibly CH4 and 5 might go sooner)
Despite supposedly 80% of the UK being able to recieve digital terrestrial transmissions, that still leaves a lot left without access to terrestrial digital TV when analogue goes off.... whilst many people will say that Sky is the answer (and probably is) there are still too many people who won't have a dish. I suspect that your pocket TV's will probably be worn out before analogue TV gets turned off. 405 line black and white TV took about 15 years to close down after colour 625 line TV started in the uk.... However, there will be a time when all analogue TV's will need a digital tuner box.... so that means current pocket TV's won't be of much use. |

It is 2003 now.
Analogue switch-off 2010. Life expectancy of modern electronic eqipment is between 4-7 years depending on the quality. Well, if I had a portable TV, I wouldn't expect it to work in 2010 anyway (because of its age). |

You will proberbly have to invest in yet another new model.
By the time analouge gets switched off, technology advances etc, there should be pocket tv's with digital tuners. |

I wouldn't be surprised if a small TV tuner is avalible by analogue switch off.
An ingeneous design would clip on to the top of the TV, and the aerial would be attached to that, and the output would be on UHF, connectiong to the telescopic aerial input, or 3.5mm jack.... Weather you'd get anything other than a red dot on a portable tv is another matter..... Based on the 405 -> 625 transition taking 15 years. If digital takes the same amount of time, we are looking at a 2013 switch off, with Channels 4 and 5 probably going sooner. VHS looks like its going to die much faster. The (mainly cabled Berlin) will take less than 12 months so it's not impossible, but the government shoud take a leaf out of the states book and mandate that all TV's (except IDTV's and those with free STB's) carry a prominante (70% of screen size) warning that they will be obsolete after 01/01/2013 - unless you purchase a STB. In the case of pocket TV's, the last bit should be dropped. |
