Sorry this is so long - I am still on an adrenaline high
We saw the 5pm and 8pm shows on Saturday in Preston.
5pm – Craig was Joseph and Chris Barton was the Narrator.
I have never seen Joseph ‘live’ before, only the Donny DVD about 3 times, which I was prepared to hate - I only bought it for the children - but I got hooked. This show was so good: you really don’t get the feel for Joseph unless you see it live. The energy of the whole cast is phenomenal, and the 4 handmaidens have so many costume changes, they must be exhausted before they even get on stage. There are lots of funny bits throughout the show, many to do with deliberately dodgy props and inflatable sheep.
The set is based on stairs, and unless you are at the very edge of the front stalls, you can see almost all of the action. I have to say, I was impressed with Chris as the narrator. I had not thought much of him in ADWD, mainly because I couldn’t stop looking at his teeth, if I am honest. On stage he has a lot of confidence, although I think his voice is not outstanding - rather breathy, and quiet, but he is clear and you understand what he is singing. He did not smile much as the narrator, but considering he has to play 3 roles, 2 of them leading ones, every Saturday, he does remarkably well. I must mention Wayne Smith who was a fantastic Gad and Pharaoh – even my husband thought he was sexy!
Most of my family only came to the 5pm show, and they did not feel at all short-changed about seeing Chris, he was excellent. Craig was very good as Joseph, especially at the humorous parts of the show. I have not seen Lee, so can’t compare, but I couldn’t find any fault with his performance. His voice is sweet and clear and true. I was not much moved by CED, partly because of squeaking child behind me (my own, I must confess), and I thought he did it rather better at 8pm.
8 pm. My eldest daughter and I stayed for the 8pm show, with Craig again and Keith as the narrator, and I have to say, Keith blew my socks off. He was amazingly good. I had voted for Lee throughout ADWD (offsetting my daughter who voted for Keith in a tit-for-tat arrangement). Although I always loved Keith’s voice, I did not think he was ready for leading roles on stage. I was wrong.
Keith was phenomenal, with a stunningly powerful voice that could be so tender and moving as well. I could rarely take my eyes off Keith when he was on stage.
Everything that Keith was told in ADWD he has remembered and built on, plus a whole lot more. It is as if he has gained several years of experience in the last couple of months. His diction was perfect and effortless, I understood everything he sang, and he managed to put emotion into it without losing clarity. We all knew his voice was powerful and he never misses a note, but I don’t think you realise the power and beauty of his voice until you hear it live. He really has an extraordinary talent, and it is obvious from how he has improved that he is not resting on his laurels but has been putting immense effort into improving everything he can about his whole performance.
He was told off sometimes on ADWD for losing focus, well he didn't one single time in the show. When he was sat on stage being still he was motionless and calm; when he was required to react to the main action he did so with humour and energy, even if he was not the main focus and many people would not have been looking at him. He was completely with the show the whole time. His dancing was great - he didn't have much to do, but he did it very well, again with energy and humour.
Keith expressed the full range of emotions, singing and physically. His voice when he goes over to Joseph after the Close Every Door was so tender and caring, so moving; he can whisper a line as clearly and melodically as he sings them. And the first song after the interval was stunning, as several of you have said.
Chris Barton needs a mention as a wonderful Benjamin – so much energy and great dancing, and he was fantastically good at acting the distress when he is found with cup. I wonder if he will have more of a future in shows where acting has a big a part as singing, because that does seem to be his forte.
Craig was great again, perhaps even better than at 5pm. His imitation of Pharaoh got a huge laugh at both shows – he milks it for all it is worth

. IN his little speech at the end he was lovely and seemed genuinely honoured, thanking everyone and introducing the ADWD boys and Wayne. They all got a huge cheer. The brothers came running out into the aisles at the end, and the megamix is really good, giving everyone a chance to show off.
If you haven’t got tickets yet, and you still can, please do. As I said at the beginning, even with Chris Barton it is a wonderful, amazing show. If you can get to see Keith as well, prepare to go dolally. And believe me, I am a LoveLee, and I am as surprised as you are that I am writing so much praise about anyone who isn’t Lee
