AV Amps with RGB?
I currently have a Denon 2802 receiver, which I am quite happy with in terms of quality, but for video switching it has S-Video, Component & composite. I was just wondering if there are any amps/receivers of similar or better quality, which can handle RGB signals from multiple sources?
Component is no good to me at present becasue my telly doesn't have it, and when I invest in a DVD recorder, I will want to route that, the digibox and my DVD player to one RGB on the telly. Is there an amp capable of this? |

I'd like to know this too.
Preferably with twin outputs, so i can record one channel and watch another. Even better if it can do a pseudo convert from Composite to Svideo so i don't have to press 20 buttons on my TV remote when switching between S-Video and Composite sources. Even better if it has an itegrated RDS tuner - that for me will probably only be used for Fly FM when Nottingham DAB launches so a seperate tuner would be a waste of cash. Currently i have an all in one, but to get a seperates system i would need a tape deck and the main amp -coupled with 5.1 speakers.... Surley it's not impossible to combine all the inputs listed in http://www.kswindells.co.uk/stuff/amp.pdf [Acrobat Reader File] http://www.kswindells.co.uk/stuff/amp.sxc [OpenOffice.org Spreadsheet] togeather into one amp, which would act as a switch box? The VCR would have to be connected via the single SCART socket, and the Tape (R) and CD (R) are reserved connections. An RDS tuner would also be liked. Now Radio 10FM has gone from MW, and with the imminant launch of Nottingham DAB the need for AM is about to vanish, and FM dropped to 56 days a year while Fly FM is on air. The third output would be liked, but is not essential Last edited by kev : 08-06-2003 at 18:53. |

AV Amps with RGB are very hard to come by because the Japanese and US markets don't use SCART leads which we use to feed RGB.
They tend to go for composite (inferior), S Video (better, but not as good as RGB) or component (better than RGB, but it depends on the kit). As well as that, manufacturers can't always find space on the back panel to put in a SCART socket for the European market - Sony is a good example on their Home Theatre kits. So S Video rules until you can up grade to component - but that's another can of worms as you'll see from posts about it...ie no wide screen switching and the like! |

--------------------------------- This is a fair point, but what about the European based companies? Surely Arcam, Marantz or someone must have thought of catering for the uniquely Euro RGB public? I think theres a rather sizeable niche here.

I don't have a list of current Sony AV kits at the moment - probably best to got to their web-site or check one of the Home Cinema magazines who have a list of recommeneded products at the back.
That's one of the reasons I bought a Sony Home Cinema kit without the DVD player incorporated, so it's driven by a Toshiba which has RGB out... |

Had a wander round Currys today and tried to check the back of all the Home Cinema kits to see which ones had SCART sockets - without setting off the alarms...
Philips did (as you might expect), I think one of the Yamahas did - although I couldn't see for debris around it - but the majority didn't. And a big Yamaha AV receiver at around £400 certainly didn't. Whereas all DVD Players did. Most of the better ones also had component - but very few TVs did. So you pays your money etc etc... |

I had a look round the Sony Center yesterday, and they had none - but apparently 2 are out next month.
Both with twin out (i.e. Watch 1 record another), but £400 with no speakers - which start at £250 Me thinks i'll have to do with the manual switch boxes for a bit longer |

Is there such a thing as a component to RGB converter? If so are they any good? I do have two in/one out component switching on the back of my Denon 2802, so I could route a DVD player and my intended DVD recorder through those sockets and into the solitary RGB scart on my telly, whilst using S-vid for things like Sky+ and possibly a freeview box in the future.

Not at work so can't give details, but yes all is doable if you wish to shell out £1000 plus on professional equipment. If I remember on Monday I will post links to said kit.
