TBF I can see what you mean and some points I have thought myself although not the bit about Chan being unpopular with Brian, Twins and Gerry which I think was the majority at that time.
I do think there was elements of wanting to show guilt to the public so that he would not be perceived as the bad guy. But I would have done exactly the same in his shoes.
For me the key thing is how he actually felt and I think the tears when she left said it all. That and the fact he kept replaying it over in his mind and discussing with other people rather than trying to distance himself from it showed that there was more to it than just public perception.
TBH I find it really interesting seeing other people's take on things. It would be a boring world if we were all the same.
