If you can afford a little extra & if its only SD material then your better off with a Plasma TV than LCD.

If you have to get LCD atleast stay with the big names like Panny, Sony, Samsung & LG

But if you can bring your self to buy online instead off a high street store then I would go for the Samsung

If your mothers sight is not great then probably the PQ is not that important but price and size is. Maybe the original choices are ok (this is from a plasma fan), the money saved could be spent on an extended warranty.

My Pioneer 427XD plasma does HD content extremely well. Why is it that you think you need an LCD set to view HD material?

Plasma tends to look better on SD because it's not as clear or sharp as LCD, so doesn't show the scaling and MPEG artifacts as much. For HD being sharp and clear is an advantage, so a good LCD tends to be better - but Plasma is certainly plenty good enough for HD as well.
