Ok, how to check if Tiscali TV is coming to your area.

Firstly, right now (Sept 2007), it's only available in London and Stevenage.

On Tiscali's own website http://www.tiscali.co.uk, when you enter your phone number at the start of the broadband sign-up process, it will only offer you the TV service if you're in the TV area or an area where the TV service should be available 'soon'. If it doesn't mention TV when you try and sign up, it means you're in an area where there are currently no plans to offer the TV service.

To see if it's coming to your area 'soon(ish)' go to http://www.samknows.com and do a search for your telephone exchange on that site.

When you found your exchange, you need to look at the LLU Service/Local Loop unbundling presence.

In that list, if 'Homechoice' is listed as being enabled, you should be able to get Tiscali TV now.
If 'Tiscali' is listed as being enabled, then Tiscali TV should become available at some point between now and the end of 2008.
If 'Pipex' is listed as being enabled, then Tiscali TV MAY become available after all the 'Tiscali' exchanges have Tiscali TV (post 2008). The Pipex plans are still not finalised at all (Tiscali are in the middle of buying Pipex at the moment) so you may find that Pipex is available on your exchange but Tiscali wont say that the TV service is coming soon in your area.

If your exchange doesn't have any of these three services on it, then it's unlikely that you'll be getting Tiscali TV in your area in the foreseeable future.

thought I'd start a new thread with this as it's likely to be a regular question in here as the Tiscali website itself isn't the most obvious.

Anyone know how to ask to make this sticky so that it's always at the top?

Unless you are also on a Tiscali enabled exchange which does not have TV enabled in which case it doesn't quite ope and claims you can't get it.

That's why I said 'should' and not 'will' - you might need to make lots of phonecalls and do quite a bit of fast talking to get Tiscali to let you sign up....

Tiscali TV is getting closer to its aim of ten million customers by the end of the year, by extending its availability to Birmingham, Leicester and Liverpool this week.

That'll be referring to a coverage area of 10 million, not 10 million customers. It'll be a typo in the DS article.

Given the size of HC's old coverage area I reckon they must have had 4-5 million covered, so to double that by the end of the year is pretty good progress (considering it took HC several years to build that up).

As for how many customers Tiscali get, we'll have to see....

(as an aside, the article also states Milton Keynes, Wolverhampton, Salford and Warrington are already covered)

The TV channels are provided over the phone line, the same as your broadband (there's no extra cable). The box also has a Freeview decoder for additional channels (eg C4+1, The Hits etc).

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ex...hp?ecode=LNDZ2 is an odd exchange. No ADSL available from BT, but Homechoice is available...?

Sam, from Samknows says:

Apparently it's correct! It's an odd one that is only used to support phone lines and leased lines in the Harbour Exchange area (lots of data centres around there).

Thanks,

Sam

Also he says...

...if they're interested, the Poplar exchange (and the Canary Wharf one, to a lesser extent) is used to provide ADSL circuits.

Thanks

Sam

I've had extreeme difficulty when trying to get Tiscali TV in MK - all MK phone numbers seem to return the same error message - that it's not available here.

This must surely be some sort of cock up on Tiscali's part? It says I can't even have broadband let alone TV! Last year I migrated to tiscali but then managed to cancel and change to Be unlimited.

Has anyone in MK got the same issue? I'm explaining all this to their sales line - but they're not interested.

Not all of MK has problems. I get 4 meg download on an up to 8meg product on my line...

Of course, if MK had that much of a problem now, Tiscali would never have spent a princely sum to put VOD/IPTV hardware in the exchanges here!

So let me rephrase my initial question in my last post: Has anyone in MK that has decent line speed, had trouble migrating to Tiscali Broadband since they launched the TV product in this area?

So I could be right then - even alot of other people have been affected with the same issues..this is sounding like a monumental cock up on Tiscali TV service rollout. Could new signups - even for just broadband have been affected?

Do they even know there could be a problem? (CS don't think so)

I got a lovely email from Tiscali today saying

Tiscali TV has just launched its new digital TV service and it’s available in your area right now. Tiscali TV gives you the best digital channels, plus a huge choice of free on demand programmes to watch whenever you want, including top UK and US comedy drama series. And even more – there’s a free catch-up service that lets you watch popular BBC, Channel 4 and FX programmes up to 7 days after transmission.

Even better: It’s all bundled together with our broadband service, free phone calls and line rental included – saving you £126 a year on line rental alone compared to BT line rental at £10.50 a month!

Wow I thought,so I rang them and guess what? The TV service is NOT avaliable in my area. When I asked why they would send an email saying it was the CS clerk shrugged her shoulders and said"Dunno,we don't send out the emails"
If this is a taste of things to come I should probably steer clear of them and look elswhere for my TV services.

My Tiscali TV has arrived. The engineer called to say he was able to come early if i wanted, so had my tv installed 2 hours early. He was very friendly and guided me through the setup and using the tv. Very happy with the service so far. The picture is a little pixelated during rapid movement shots, but still much better than the picture I was getting with freeview. The current STB they are supplying is the Telsey STB FS6, so before the PVR has been released.
Does anyone have any idea what the two USB sockets are for?
