Well in tonight's Emmerdale it looked more like a city than the market town that it's supposed to be.

Since when has it meant to be a market town? They've always said they are going into Hotten if they are doing some shopping. I expect it to be something like Bradford and Leeds.

Hotten is like the room of requirement in the Harry Potter books. Whatever is needed for a story, you will find it there.

But they sometimes mention going to Leeds for shopping / additional excitement to so I always thought it's the nearest market town.

Is it big enough for an arena for the One Direction tour?

Well it could have expanded in the last 40 years!

I think Hotten is meant to be the nearest big town. Leeds being the nearest city. If it's a big enough town it will have quite a lot there

Didn't Barraclough live in a high rise apartment that was supposed to be Hotten?

Some weeks it's the size of Otley other weeks it's the size of Leeds, with the most frequented suberbs of Hotten being a carbon copy of Adel and Alwoodley, and the nitelife areas strongly resemble Headingley

They don't go to town v often now, except to BW (in Headingly) but when they did it was normally Otley or Leeds, and the houses they use are def Adel/Alwoodley. Laurel's mum and Faye Lamb, lived off The Avenue, and Gorden Livsey lived in a close off Adel Lane, also not that we ever see it now but the Malt is The New Inn at Eccup. Of course this would all make sense bcos of their proximity to the village. Now 3 guesses where I grew up

When Laurel was on community service (though i can't remember what for) in Hotten and Debbie and Natasha were following Mark, the filming was done in Otley.

Considering LBIA now charge £2 just to enter the car park to drop someone off and leave a minute later, they probably wanted too much dosh to allow filming. Greedy b*st*rds!

I imagine that the Doncaster airport is also quieter than LBIA and so easier for filming to take place. Doncaster airport was also used for Matt Lucas and David Walliams to film Come Fly With Me.

I always thought of it as a market town rather than a big town. It used to be where all the cattle auctions etc. took place. Also, Bradford got referred to in name in the early years, which seemed to indicate that it was the nearest big town - Hotten presumably being somewhere in between the two in terms of size.

But I think that as the village used for filming has changed location a few times over the years, the towns which they film in have changed accordingly, for proximity reasons. So the locations now used for Hotten scenes are not the same as those used in the past.

I wonder what happened to Skipdale - it never gets mentioned any more.

Although Aaron flew out of Doncaster no mention was made of HI. When HI appeared, ie Eric and Amy waiting for Val, they did use Leeds/Bradford.
