Apple have just announced that the 4GB model will be discontinued and the 8GB has had a whopping $200 knocked off the price, making it $399. At what will probably be around £250 when it arrives over here, that makes it no more expensive than most other top-end phones. Roll on the UK release...!

I bet the early adopters are pissed though!

but we all know that the UK pays a lot more for everything.

Whats the betting it will cost £300+ ?

thats gotta be the shortest product lifetime i've ever seen. I would be standing in the apple store right now if i had bought one at launch. talk about being ripped off.

The 4GB was probably discontinued because 8GB seems to be the minimum now (considering the iPod touch has 16GB it wouldn't be unreasonable to think there will be a 16GB iPhone too).

As for ripped off - things come down in price all the time. Granted, not this soon usually, but thats the price you pay for being an early adopter.

Plus another free software update that will allow you to purchase music wirelessly from the new Wifi iTunes store.

the iPod Touch is priced at $399 (16gb) in the US store and at £269 in the UK store so the iPhone (now at $399) SHOULD also be £269 once released in the UK

If it's unsubsidised.. which it probably won't be.

If the rumours of Apple having negotiated 10% of the revenue generated from iPhone (from the networks) then I would imagine the networks are very unlikely to also subsidise the handsets.

That'd be assuming they price it here along the lines of the new US price. Can't see them doing that at launch

It almost certainly will be unsubsidised. Apple don't want it to be subsidised.

They won't have two completely separate price points. It will be the same price in all territories allowing for exchange rates, taxes etc.

I would imagine it would have to be the same price as the 16GB iPod Touch - it would be very hard to justify charging more for it when they're identically priced in the US. Although I suppose it depends on the provider deal they do, they may have decided that the amount they earn from AT&T helps justify the price drop.

But the UK market doesn't work like that.

I don't think it will be subsidised. I also think the EU version will be a second gen iPhone allowing Apple to charge a bit more for it - hopefully 3G.

Im cant see why apple has to partner with a network in the uk, surely they would make more money if they sold them sim free direct.

Features like "visual voicemail" require network support. Apple also want a portion of revenues from phone contracts too.

It might not be normal for phones to be unsubsidized over here but I bet you it wont be.

"free" software update is not really something to be proud of.

The best part of that update appears to be the ability to set you music as a ringtone now .... oh except it appears that you need to buy a track from iTunes first and then pay again to have the track converted into a 30 second clip for playback !

Some reports about the $100 refund to early adoptors ( apple_jobs_give_refund_to_iphone_buyers ).

A $100 refund that only be used at Apple store (or online) ... since accessories usually have huge markups that means its cost Apple about $30 in actual value.

oh come on - they didn't have to do that, and it's not the sort of thing most companies would do - so it's still a pretty impressive gesture.

It's true they didn't have to do it, but at the same time they "could" have just given them the $200 back, afterall the iPhone has only been on sale for 60 something days. Its more of a gesture, but done in such a way to maximise publicity with the least amount of money actually being given back.

But with the Apple software updates they fix problems and add new features - other mobiles are a pain in the ass to upgrade where as the iPhone will just update the next time you sync with iTunes.

There is more to the ringtone than you suggest and when compared with the cost of ring tones from mobile operators and through text messages it is a bargin.

Pretty sure we've been thru this before. Apple are not the only ones to fix problems and certainly not the only ones to add features. If connecting a cable and clicking a few buttons is a pain in the ass then I must be a very tolerant person.

However when compared to the cost of just selecting an MP3 from my memory card (free), it suddenly seems to be very expensive.

Really?

Care to tell me what model of phone is a pain to upgrade?

Whats easier than this...

Plug phone in (like you would the iphone)
Open nokia/SE updater (like opening itunes, 2 clicks)
Click check for updates then update as instructed.

Now to me upgrading any other model of phone is just as easy so i have no idea why you seem to think that the iphone is any easier.

Also regarding the ringtones. Only an idiot would pay the prices asked by mobile operators for ringtones and now good old mr jobs is treating all apple users like idiots by charging them twice to have a ringtone lol

Gets better by the week this

I agree, ringtones are a rip off if you can put them on for free but millions download them all the time and Apple's version is better and cheaper.

The big difference is people don't bother updating their Nokias and SEs except for a few savvy computer users like you as you have to use an application you never have to normally use. Joe Bloggs won't run the updater - it won't even cross their minds to do it. Every time you dock the iPhone to charge it iTunes opens - updates and shown to be available there and then. I bet most iPhones are on the latest version - something that cannot be said for other mobiles especially as operators block you updating phones that have their own crappy software on - Orange, Vodafone, 3 and t-mobile. My k800 is well over a year old and it still claims to have the latest software.

I'm confused as to why everyone is waiting for the iPhone. It's great, but the monthly subscription is going to be like £50 a month or something. What's great about that?
