Can High Def discs be brought from the US to play on machines here as looking through on some sites some have region 1 for the USA and others say unknown next to region. Thanks

HD-DVD is region free.

However, while nothing has been announced, it is possible region coding could be activated later via updates to the player's firmware for future releases, so there is a slight possibility that could happen. The situation looks very unlikely to change at the moment.

Blu-Ray is not region free.

However, many current disks are region free, it depends on the studio releasing the title. The newer titles from some of the studios (e.g. MGM/Sony) are region locked. I've seen no sign of anyone having "cracked" the region locking on any Blu-ray player to make the player region free.

Here's a website that maintains a current list of region free blu ray titles:

http://bluray.liesinc.net/

The DVD side of combi disks (one side DVD, the other HD-DVD ) is not - just like vanilla DVD. If you have a region free DVD player though...

Hope that helps!
