We discussed this here http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=652893 and i explained how to set up your system prior to the arrival of SkyHD and after.

Is the Goodmans system serviceable? ie does it have any optical or coaxial audio inputs? If it does we can utilise this as your amp/speaker system and use the cyberhome as the recorder/player. this can also archive from SkyHD.

the big issue is the Sony. Take it back! It is of no real use if you cannot use it as a satisfactory amplifier.

If the cyberhome isn't up to scratch in the amp dept then that cant be used as your amp and we're getting to the piont where you need a new seperate amp.

Come back

Scorpio;
I must seem like a complete div, but i just do not understand this connectivity stuff, Scarts/AV1,2 OPTICAL, RCA Etc I am sorry but I just don't
What I really want is as follows

Std Sky Box

LCD TV 37inch LG with 3 Scarts and one HDMI

Sony DAV-DZ231 Home Theatre (Which I cannnot find a diagram for)

Cyberhome DVDR Recorder, Good connections I think

The home theatre does not or the cyberhome do not have opticals

I want to be able to connect the DZ231 to the skybox and LCD and connect in the DVDR somehow to record only, I can not find a diagram anywhere to follow, I cannot seem to follow words only. I again apologise for my complete lack of knowledge in this subject, I think confidence is a lot to do with it I do not trust myself to get this right, would you be able to do me a diagram? also RGB AV1 AV2 confuses me.
Thanks in anticipation, I can provide my email wddress if this woul help.
Kindest Regards from a techno gimp

the first thing I need to know now is - does the Goodmans have good connectivity (ie digital audio inputs).

If it does, then this can be your amp. We can use the Cyberhome as a player and recorder. You will also be able to take the Sony back.

If it doesn't have good connectivity then I would seriously suggest taking the Sony back anyway and replacing it with something that is better in the amp/connection dept.

Unfortunately, the Sony will compromise your ability to connect Sky HD lovely 6 channel sound - also, how many HDMI inputs in the TV? You will be using one for the Sony (if you keep it) or for Sky HD if you dont.

There seems little point in providing you more set up info (will be the same as my 1st post) that will result in either a compromise in sound (no DD 5.1 from Sky) or in picture (no HDMI for Sky).

I hope I havent confused you further but really the start piont is the amp..............can we salvage the Goodmans or is it back to the drawing board?

OK, you need an amp something like this Sony and some speakers like these Yamaha ones both from Richer Sounds. Total £230.

The amp has loads of connectivity: you need to connect up like this (using std Sky box). Things will need to change slightly as Sky HD will use HDMI output instead of a scart lead and ith also has a digital audio feed (optical digital) instead of the analog one on std Sky).

come back when you are upgrading to HD and we can make the change.

But, I digress!!! Connect as follows (these are the video connections):-

Sky TV out scart (the bottom of the 2 scarts on the back of the sky box) ---> Cyberhome AV2 scart (this is the input scart socket)
Cyberhome AV1 scart (output) ---> TV AV1 scart

The Sky system will pass its signal through the Cyberhome and on into the TV. Set the TV to AV1 for watching Sky or DVD. When Sky is brought out of standby it will appear on the screen. Similarly if you play a DVD this will override Sky. You need to play around here to understand how the overrides work.

Now the audio connections:

Cyberhome digital audio out (you havent confirmed that there is one on this device) ---> corresponding digital input on the Sony amp. (select this amp input when playing DVDs so as to allow 5.1 channel surround sound)

TV audio out phono left/right ---> Sony amp analog audio input left/right (select this amp input when watching all other TV pictures (Sky, TV)

Probably more than enough for you to think about here.....dont you have anyone who can help you understand this set up?

Rgds,
Scorp

ps I am available for practical installations depending on location........

apologies, it looks like my links to richer sounds for a Sony amp and Yamaha speakers didn't take - I'll try again. It was the suggested sony amp that I was referring to in my set up notes.

In fact, the two devices I mentioned are included in this 3 device package (including Sony DVD player) for £249

Scorp. I have now taken the Dav-DZ231 back to currys! So I am going to try and use the Goodmans as the amp
and Cyberhome as the player/recorder
The Cyberhome has the following on the back
Antenna in
Antenna Out
Coaxial Out-Digital Coaxial Audio
Audio R/L Out- Analogue 2 channel White/Red
Video Out-Yellow
Ext2 Aux-Scart Socket 2
S-Video Out
Ext1 Scart Socket 1 to connect to tv

It also has on the front
DV in i Link / DV Socket
Audio L (White)
Audio R (Red)
Video In 2 (Yellow)

Is this enough?

The Goodmans has the following
TV Antenna in & Out
Cr/Y/Cb out
S-Video 1 In
S-Video Out
RCA Video 1 in
RCA Video out
RCA Audio 1 in (Left & Right)
RCA Audio out (Left & Right)
Coaxial (Digital Out)
21 - pin Scart socket (In)
21 - Pin Scart TV Socket

Then all the Speaker terminals/MW & FM Ariels

On the Front
S-Video 2 Input
Video 2 Input
Audio 2 Input

Does this help sort a diagram for

Sky--> DVD R-->Goodmans HTS (DVD tray busted)--LG
LCD Tele with 3 scarts

Thanks

Ok, well done for taking the DAV back. To look at the Richer sounds items you just need to click on the link as it is in the post. Alternatively, go to www.richersounds.co.uk and look under the homecinema tab.

there is still a problem with using the Godmans as the amp in that it doesnt seem to have a digital audio input. this is where you can feed in the audio from other devices like Sky HD or another DVD player.

the Cyberhome has a digital audio out but there is nowhere in the Goodmans to plug it.

There is another way to connect these two devices but you will not get full 5.1 sound (only an imitation called pro-logic).

Have a look at the richersounds site and let me knnow what you think.

Rgds,
Scorp

ps we'll get there, I dont give up easily!!

I have resigned myself for the immediate future, until say late December to try and stick with the equipment I have and save another £200-£300 and go the way of separates. So for now you unbeleivably patient person I just need to connect what I have.

Std Skybox--Cyberhome DVDR--Goodmans Home Cinema (As Amp only) and LG LCD TV 37 inch HD with Built in freeview, I also have a VCR? could that help at all?? (I will be getting the HD Sky box in mid november)
so most of my existing stuff will be redundant then. So bestconnections for what I have now please.
PS thanks for the link re-intalling very interesting.

PPS Why does'nt someone build a website with shed loads of connectivity diagrams fro all equipment and advice?

Regards Again

VCR AV1 ---> Sky VCR scart (the top one on sky)
Sky TV out scart (the bottom one) ---> Cyberhome AV2 scart (this is the input scart socket)
Cyberhome AV1 scart (output) ---> TV AV1 scart

The VCR and the Sky system will pass their signals through the Cyberhome and on into the TV.

Set the TV to AV1 for watching VCR tapes, Sky or DVDs.
When Sky is brought out of standby it will appear on the screen. Similarly if you play a DVD or a tape this will override Sky.

You need to play around here to understand how the overrides work.

Now the audio connections:

As the goodmans has no digital inputs or the ability to play discs itself you cant utilise full 5.1 sound........

SO..............we just need to connect audio out left and right phonos from the TV back into the Goodmans usinf its AUX input.

Select AUX on the Goodmans for all audio as this will convert the TV sound into a ProLogic surround sound.

Select AV1 on the TV for watching all input from VCR, Sky or DVD.

Give this a whirl.

Scorp
