Yes, keep both! Use them for playing tapes/discs and invest in a new twin tuner digital PVR for your recording - far better than messing with blank tapes and discs.

Also, dont buy combi kit as you'll have to dump it all when one part fails.

If your VCR still works (as in, it still plays tapes) why do you want to replace this part with a combi? Just get a DVDR (which will be up to £100 less than a combi) and connect your VCR to your DVDR via scart. The quality will be as good as doing it via a combi, but will still be rubbish, because videotape is rubbish.

Doing it this way also means that you could, in theory, get round the macrovision protection on commercial tapes by using a sonel scart, which you certainly couldn't do via a combi.

Hi mate, I bought a Samsung combi December last year, can't remember the exact model no. (something like DVR330) copied over 100 vhs over to dvd and its never gone wrong... so far anyway and it only cost £130.

Not to mention that it is illegal to copy commercial copyrighted VHS tapes this way and many are protected so it is impossible to copy them with a combi anyway. A separate DVD recorder (preferably with its own hard disk) is much the better way. Save the money and spend it on bargain bin DVD copies instead
