Using a UK TV in New Zealand query
Storm123

If I take a UK purchased TV back to NZ, will it work over there?

I do know they use PAL, 25 Fps, 625 lines, UHF etc - but it appears that they also use a slightly different offset for the tuner [5.5Mhz against our 6 Mhz]

Any help would be greatly appreciated

New Zealand uses PAL B/G which is UHF and VHF and also using 5.5Mhz sound.

A standard UK tv won't work unless it can handle 5.5Mhz sound AND has a wideband tuner.

Many TV's do work and many won't

Personally I'd not bother unless you only wanted to use the TV as a monitor via a New Zealand VCR (which would relay correct channels and sound to the TV via the AV sockets)

I have a PAL B/G TV which when you use it in the UK, there are pictures but no sound.

It will as has been said, work if fed through its phono sockets (no SCART on it), from a VCR.

UK standards TVs work almost nowhere else in the world except Ireland and Hong Kong.

NZ works on 240 volts, so your electrical equipment should work, except the plugs are different of course.
If your TV set is fairly recent, it should have a multistandard tuner, to enable it to work in all countries.
If it is an older model, or is a single standard model, you are best of buying a new TV in New Zealand.

It may well have a multistandard tuner but not necessarily multistandard sound capability.

Many TV's will work all over europe but then again, many will not. Some will receive pictures but no sound.

Multiband tuner can refer to being UHF and VHF capable but it still may only decode PAL I -UK sound at 6Mhz. Whether the multiband tuner TV can select 5.5Mhz sound as required in European PAL B/G countries is another matter... oh and of course then there's France's SECAM system

Anyhow back to the original posting.. I'd probably not think it really cost effective to take a UK to New Zealand unless you had a true multistandard TV.. even then there may be problems getting it fixed if it goes wrong and requiring parts.
