i don't want to keep hijacking the HK3 thread (which appears to be mainly a WHATM thread) with serious discussion, so here's a separate thread for general discussion about the programme, inspired by washboard's astute and brilliant comment about barry over on the HK3 thread.

which elicited some proper debate. my answer is here.

But the way he put his points to Jim were a masterclass in how to broach difficult subjects, and get your point across assertively, but kindly. Even Jim (possibly) 'got it'. He certainly knew that there was no way he could turn it into a 'Barry, you don't understand/you're picking on me/I'm the victim here' situation.
Barry to win!
(And then to train the nation's counsellors, the world's conflict prevention gurus, and be nominated 'role model')
Actually, that's a hell of a burden for anyone...
So, I'll settle for 'Barry to win!'”

A 'real man', in ways which posturing bad boys are not.
And a true role model, in the sense that I would be happy if my son and nephews were to grow up to be like that.
(Good thing I'm not on Hells Kitchen, or they'd be showing clips of me 'admiring' Barry to the strains of some ironically romantic tune!

Nevertheless, I stand by what I've said - even if it comes across as a bit more 'gushing' than I'd like

this isn't constructive though, because of course jim davidson does have some very deep seated "issues" revolving around sexual identity and women, which is why as i said from the beginning, he's a misogynist. but he detests and is threatened by women even more than gay men.
in his note to the girls he totally dismissed them. why? because in the 70s, he had the power to "pull dolly birds" as they said in those days, and now he doesn't. so who's fault is that? in his eyes, the girls' fault, of course, which is exactly why he was so dismissive of them. the fact that they found him completely transparent simply exacerbated his ire.
and using the "poor me, where does that leave me?" excuse is really lame.
"oh, i can't have black people as my slaves any more? why not? poor me!"
"oh, i can't have it in the marriage contract that my future wife is my property and i'm allowed to beat her if she refuses sex any more? poor me!"*
"oh, i cant verbally abuse gay people any more? poor me!"
what a loser.
* yup. this was part of the marriage contract as recently as the 19th century...
as to MPW, he continues to bewitch me daily. his touch with food is magical; there is an alchemy going on between him and food that is on a higher artistic plane. the only other person i've seen this happening with is heston blumenthal who i also love. however i don't fancy heston whereas marco makes me melt into goo (he still needs FUDGE hair putty though.)
nice to see some focus on timers last night. as i said the other day, in a kitchen, timing is everything. i laughed when someone said "i love my timer" - i use similar timers to those in HK and i love my timers too in a rather suspiciously anal way. i like to be able to get to the oven within 5 seconds of the timer going off by being in tune with it.
...and angus deaton continues to be hilarious. this is defo my favourite reality show of all time now.”
