The not-so-great smell of clothes wash?
On the advice of another poster I switched from washing powder to liquid to prevent my drains getting blocked - bought some Ariel liquid tablets or whatever they're called. Now my house stinks of Ariel.
Is there a nicer smelling liquid clothes wash that actually gets things clean at 30 degrees? [yeah, I thought about putting this in "advice" but it's more about personal taste I think] |

Why would washing powder block drains? It dissolves in water.

A plumber sent to clear my drain said that it's washing powder that collects into a ball and sticks in the drain, rather like it does in the washing machine compartment, that causes blockages.

I use Persil non-bio powder (y'know the one that comes in the massive blue boxes).
There's no beating it at the end of the day - I don't go in for all these 2-in-1 liquid tablets or those in-wash 'dispenser balls'. Good old powder + high temp wash = clean clothes. |

Bold 2-in-1 crushed silk and jasmine - yummy!
EDIT: not sure if it's any good for your machine but it sure smells nice! |

Is there something in some washing powders that makes your clothes smell of crap when they come out of the wash?
I think we use ASDAs washing powders and for some reason, with some clothes, I put them in the wash and they come out literally smelling of dog crap!! Does anybody else have this problem? |

No, but have you checked to see if a dog has indeed crapped in the drum before putting in the washing

I buy Sainsburys Perform liquid tabs. Clothes smell nice and they don't stink the house out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe next time I'm at a loose end I'll go and sniff some bottles in Sainsbury's.

Some products can leave a malodour, but more often than not smells from the washing machine caused by bacteria living in there within door seals etc are passed onto the clothes.

What I also have to do every now and then is disconnect the outlet pipe under the sink and clean that out manually - it often gets clogged up with nasty gunk there. Also, once a fortnight, just do a quick wash with absolutely nothing in there and just let it wash the machine through. |

It's far more likely that the soil pipe isn't connected at the optimum height & water from the kitchen sink trap is being sucked back into the machine.
I've never ever had to wash a washing machine out as described above or had one that smells like dog shit The worst I've encountered is the drawer getting a bit gungy, but that's about it.

Washing machines cause smelly clothes when stagnant water ends up sitting in the sump between washes. As someone above states, this is often due to a poorly plumbed waste pipe.
