Virgin Cable 2/mbs VOIP
Ok new to VOIP, just starting to read up about it all.
Can I use VOIP on the basic virgin Cable 2/mbs? What do I need buy to make calls without the PC on. I only have the basic cable modem you get with virgin. Looking at sipgate but if any other info about to help? Thanks in advance! |

VoIP will work just fine with the 2Mb cable service (even after it's been STM'd). To make calls with a standalone phone, you'd need a VoIP adaptor such as the Linksys PAP2T, in which you hook it up to your router/sub and plug in a normal phone (or DECT phone).
If you have the modem hooked up directly to your PC (ie. no router or internet sharing facility), you'd need to get hold of a cable router. As for services, Sipgate are good to start off with. Some people swear by Draytel, there's also Orbtalk. Then there's Voipcheap, and other services under the Betamax group umbrella, which offer free calls to various countries. I personally use Voipcheap.com regularly, to get the free UK/intl. calls. |

PS look around for bargains, Staples were selling these for £10 at the beginning of the year. |

Hi, just to second the other poster's comments here:
Sipgate works fine on my VM 2m/bit connection. I opted for a Linksys WRT54GP2 VOIP router (twin RJ11 phone ports on-board) I have also used X-Lite and SJPhone soft phones including the PDA version of SJPhone with success. I recently bought a Grandstream Budgetone 101 and this also works brilliantly - I can even make calls between this and a phone connected to my router and still there is sufficient bandwidth to cope. Take the plunge! Hope this helps... |

Whoops, forgot about routers with built in VoIP adaptors. Didn't think they were that common!
