Thinking of getting one, Just wanted some questions answered.

Interface
Is it slow at all? Not fussed about cover flow being slow, It's just that my Nano was pretty snappy with menus.

Screen
Is the screen bright/Clear?

Cases
Anyone tried it out with a case made for a 60 or 80 gig iPod? Hopefully it'll fit..Dont want the chrome back being scratched up.

Cheers

I'm getting mine by the end of the month!! I suspect the cases for the old ipods will fit , because the new ones will be smaller.

I have an 80GB classic.

The interface is fine - no problems

The screen is bright and very clear

I don't have a case.

Nice review of it here. It should be able to aid your decision.

Had the 160GB since Tuesday. Overall not impressed. It's certainly not as good for getting information on "the go" as my old Creative Zen M. At least with that I knew what my most played where and how many times without having to plug in iTunes.
I hate the fact you can't just remove tracks you have to have iTunes open and sync it to do so. Don't like the fact it doesn't scroll all of an artists full name if it's a long name.

Good points - bright, clear screen. Bigger size (the only real reason I bought it is due to the 160GB)

As for cover flow. I have no intention of using it till it's been fixed by Apple.

Cheers New interface looks nice, Although I wont be using cover flow, unless to show it off. 80Gig classic it is. With a Ted Baker case.

Your most played can be easily viewed with a smart playlist. Most people don't need to know how many times a song has been listened to - other than to maybe initially define a playlist. There is a lot of info Apple could include but they've decided to keep it simple. It might not be for everyone but it's very good for the majority of people - hence the sales and repeat sales.

That's a conscious decision Apple made at the beginning. Many people would lose track of what was where if they could delete stuff in both places. The number of people who put all their music on the iPod then want to delete it off their computer is staggering. If they could then delete it off the player directly you'd have a lot of people constantly losing things. Which is part of the reason why the iTunes/iPod model is so successful - the simplicity and transparency of the system.
The long name I agree with but at the same time it doesn't really bother me since I know the name, I don't have any artists whose name doesn't fit and I'm not likely to confuse them with someone else.

Personally, I've got my playlists how I want them, sync it regularly and just hit play and leave it until I'm done.

Don't agree. the majority of people who buy iPods are sheep. They do it because "It's Cool" or their friends have one.
I only bought mine because they brought out one big enough in GB for what I wanted.
If Creative had done what everyone thought they were going to do and bring out a decent sized HD player I wouldn't have touched an iPod with an 80ft barge pole.
I do notice one thing though, with Apple fanboys, you simply cannot criticize the Apple at all. Everything is perfect the iPod is brilliant. IMO it's far from brilliant the interface is crap. Overall as a player and taking into account using the pile of garbage that is iTunes 6/10.

Did the update do much for the interface speed HV?

I have never been on the go and wondered to myself how many times I've played a particular song. With thousands of songs in my library it just doesn't matter. It's just not information I need on a portable device. I don't need the number of times it's been skipped, when it was last played, when it was added, when it was modified, the bitrate, the filesize or many othe other fields you can view and edit in iTunes. I just want to listen to my music. Sure there is an element of people buying what other people do, but by and large they do so because people are generally positive about them, they don't buy iPods because they're told that's all you can buy.

There are plenty of little things I could point to with Apple products that could be improved or added but as a whole package, the ease of use and integration with other services is one that suits me and a lot of other people perfectly. I am prepared to sacrifice some "features" for the overall benefits it gives me.

Ditch iTunes and use MediaMonkey (assuming it works with the new gen iPods and Apple have shut of that avenue of escape as well).

Does everything iTunes does (for audio anyway ... not sure about video) and more. It's faster. You can normalise your music volumes PROPERLY (not iTunes half assed propriatery method) and music will still play back on the iPod.

The wife uses it with her 5.5 gen. She has to really as all our music is normalised properly by MediaMonkey and they don't work if transferred through iTunes.

** EDIT **

Not usre if play count etc transfers to and fro like it sounds like iPod/iTunes does.

i think there are reasons why people of who buy ipod think they are cool. and reasons for their friend having bought them. i suggest that the ease of use of ipod + itunes is one of those reasons.

The interface is recognised as being the best in a mobile music player.

You mean because you're FORCED to use iTunes with your iPod. No one else forces you to use their software bar Apple.
Creative you can drag and drop. Not sure with the Sony system. But overall I am not over impressed with the iPod or the way you have to use iTunes. I know someone has said it may be possible to use MediaMonkey, but the way Apple are cutting off the use of 3rd party appliances for the Classics it wouldn't surprise me if they've stopped that trick as well.

But the Apple fanboys will still froth over how good it is.

Sony were (their newer stuff is far less restrictive apparently) worse than Apple. At least iTunes works well (if not to my tastes). SonicStage (the Sony equivalent) is truly awful. Whcih is a shame as the players themselves are actually pretty decent. Alternatives are pretty much non-existant ... at least there are a few decent iTunes alternatives about.

As for MediaMonkey, it looks like it should work with the classic ... certainly worth a try anyway. It's a nice piece of software, I like it. Party mode rules .... no drunken idiots deleting half your music library by mistake when you have a party!

Oh ... and do have to say I like the click-wheel interface. It does work very well. Don't like iTunes ....

you're not forced to do anything. if you don't want to use itunes, get one of the other players you mention. but ipod and itunes is a package deal. just like osx and macs. this works out pretty well for most people because it allows for greater reliability. you obviously have minority interests which would be better served with another company.

There were reports that the Classics were a bit sluggish on the UI, has the lastest firmware update solved this problem?
